 REVERENCE IN SERVICE

TEXT: PSALM 2:11

''Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.''

Christians, this verity must be deeply crested upon our hearts: the God with whom we have to do, is a consuming fire and, therefore the most glorious one,--- let no one deal with Him thoughtlessly,--- it becomes a saint, in all his holy duties, to conduct himself, therefore, towards Him, in great reverence; yes, he needs be one who bears upon his heart a taking respect for and in the services of God. What is a beggar before a king; a worm before a giant; a candle light in comparison to the sun? Would a beggar dare approach the king's palace without being summoned by his him? How full of fear and reverence are palace attendants in the King's presence! The King of heaven would be served by mortal, for such is the effect of His condescending grace and allowance to man; but He must be so serve with fear, respect, reverence and decorum. He serves without fear, as commanded by scripture, who gives not his all to God. If the name of God is often on our tongues but never in our hearts, we do then serve Him without fear. Many there are who only are out to midwife their own reputations and honour in the services of God: this can be charged with irreverent services unto God. To ordain his own way in God's services by setting aside God's appointed way of worship, is a vilifying of God almighty. Gravity of heart, faithfulness to biblical doctrines and holding forth the word of truth, argue a reverence for God. In speaking for God, he who fears God, says nothing if clarity has not been known. How many usurpers there are today, who presume to be apostles of Christ, but are not! Brothers, God is great and higher in heaven above us, hence what services we bring to Him, must be worthy of His being and glory. Let us cultivate fear for God. If we rejoice, we must tremble therein. Oh fear and tremble always, thou servant of God. Fall on your face before God, know how great He is. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Amen!
