 THE SCEPTER OF SERVICE

TEXT:MATTHEW 23:11

“But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.”

In the Kingdom of Christ, the badge of greatness is service, yes, service unto the brethren: he is the greatest who serves the most. In the eyes of God and the elect angels, the disposition to wait for others to serve us, cuts us short before heaven. He ascends the throne of honour, who stoops down to serve the brethren. A bucket that would obtain water, must be content to go down into the well away from the view of all into dark region; hands that would remain clean, wash clothes oft; so also he that desires true honour from God must remain servant of all. Any man that lives amongst brethren as he that serves, exercises his body, in that he is always in motion: and motions keeps the joints lubricated: so also in the kingdom of God; he who serves, exercises his grace; adds strength to his grace and attracts other graces into his life. Alas! who is as miserable as he who loves to be served all the time! this would never grow in grace. Christians, would you be great in the hand of Christ? serve His brethren, the church. Every garb of servanthood is a vestment royal in the eyes of Christ; the dis-staff for holding the flax, tow, or wool in spinning clothes for the brethren, is the sceptre in our hand: none who spins for the brethren, lacks the praise of the church. Great generals in God's army, bow the heart of the church, not so much by force, as by their service to the least of the Saints. Holy brothers, why look for a time when men will pour water into your hands, when you are not now pouring water into the hands of men around you? Yearn to serve rather than being served. Be always a-thinking what to do for others, not what others can do for you. In every service we give to men, we show ourselves alive, obedient, royal, the greatest and Christlike. He who receives services, stands in danger of pride, not so with he who serves! Whatever prevents from service to man, fights our greatness. The easiest way to be great in the sight of God, is by rendering services to the brethren; helping them with chores and bearing their burdens. Love to serve: fear to be served!
