William Carey had to leave school at the age of 14...

William Carey had to leave school at the age of 14 to earn a living. His fingers were not suited for his father's trade as a weaver, so he worked as a cobbler (mender of shoes).

He sewed together a large globe made from colored left over scraps of shoe leather. He would use it when teaching children geography lessons.

He also made a world map out of paper that he hung in front of his work bench. He used the map to summarise his research about different countries.

As each new land and people came to his knowledge, he added to his map the location and total number of souls, recording their spiritual state; Romanists, pagans etc.

One time at a ministers' meeting there was some discussion about a small island in India. Quietly, and to the astonishment of the other ministers, from a back corner Carey reported its location, length, breadth, and nature along with the number and religious character of its people. He had looked and prayed over this island on his wall map.

The map became the basis of his famous pamphlet, An Enquiry (1792).
