 Final Things: The Ancient Church

“Be vigilant about your life. Do not let your lamps be snubbed out nor your loins relaxed. Rather be prepared for you do not know the hour for which the Lord is coming. You should gather frequently and seek those things appropriate for your souls. For the whole time [allotted] for your faith will not profit you unless you are perfected in the final moment.1 For in the last days false prophets and corrupters will be increased and sheep will be turned into wolves and love will be turned into hate.2 As lawlessness grows, they will hate, persecute, and betray one another, and then the world deceiver will appear as a son of God [Antichrist] and will perform signs and wonders, and the earth will be delivered into his hands, and he will do unlawful things that have never been done. Then the creation of men will [fall away], and perish, but those who endure in their faith will be saved by [Jesus Christ] who became the curse.3 Then the signs of truth will appear. The first is a sign spreading out in heaven, then a sign of the trumpet blast, and the third the resurrection of the dead. But not for all, as it was said, “The Lord and all his holy ones will come with him.” Then the world will see the Lord coming on the clouds of heaven.

The Teaching of the Lord for the Nations through the 12 Apostles. Clement of Rome & the Didache Pg. 151
Written sometime in the 1st or early 2nd Century

1)By growing in faith, the Christian grows in perfection, which is the goal of the spiritual life. [aka Christ likeness.]
2)Because of the increase in lawlessness, the love of many will grow cold.
3)Gal 3:13
