Often the wrong is not overt sin but really wrong priorities.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. - Matthew 6:33

2 "Thus says the LORD of hosts: These people say the time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the LORD."
3 Then the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet,
4 "Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins? - Haggai 1:2-4

We must prioritize these two things above all else in life:

Be the church Jesus has called us to be and build the church Jesus has called us to build. Everything else in life is vanity and meaningless. That is not an overstatement.

When your priorities in life do not match up with God’s two priorities, He will frustrate every thing you attempt to do and He will not allow you to be happy or find meaning in your life.

You looked for much, and behold, it came to little. And when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? declares the LORD of hosts. Because of my house that lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house. - Haggai 1:9

A thought:

We are not seeking the kingdom of God when we are immersed in the kingdom of "self" and/or the world.
And, when we build the house of "self", we ruin the house of God.

Add:

1 Cor. 15:50 -- Now I say this, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.

 Re:

William Law:

"The kingdom of self is the fall of man or the great apostasy from the life of God in the soul. The kingdom of Christ is the Spirit and power of God dwelling and manifesting itself in the birth of a new inward man.....By thus knowing and acknowledging our own nothingness and incapacity for good except that of receiving from God alone, self is wholly denied; its kingdom is destroyed....desire nothing but that every moment of your life may be given to God."
