VATICAN CITY--Speaking to a crowd of tens of thousands, Pope Benedict XVI urged Roman Catholics to attend Sunday mass regularly, underlining that it should be seen as a joy rather than a burden.

"Without Sunday, we Christians cannot live," said the newly-elected pontiff during his Sunday Angelus before a packed Saint Peter's Square.

"Sunday Mass must be felt by a Christian as a need and a joy, not as an obligation or a burden," the pope said.

The German-born pope urged parents to show their children the importance of going to church, and stressed the role of the first communion in the life of Roman Catholics.
