The Great God

The Great God

O FOUNTAIN OF ALL GOOD,

Destroy in me every lofty thought,
Break to pieces and scatter it to the winds,
Annihilate each clinging shred of self-righteousness,
Implant in me true lowliness of spirit,
Abase me to self-loathing and self-abhorrence,
Open in me a found of penitential tears,
Break me, then bind me up;
Thus will my heart be a prepared dwelling for my God;
Then can the FAther take up his abode in me,
Then can the blessed Jesus come with healing in his touch,
Then can the Holy Spirit descend in sanctifying grace;
O Holy Trinity, three Persons and one God,
inhabit me, a temple consecrated to thy glory.

When thou art present, evil cannot abide;
In thy fellowship is fullness of joy,
Beneath thy smile is peace of conscience,
By thy side no fears disturb,
no apprehensians banish rest of mind,
With thee my heart shall bloom with fragrance;
make me meet, through repentance, for thine indwelling.

Nothing exceeds thy power,
Nothing is too great for thee to do,
Nothing too good for thee to give.
Infinite is thy might, boundless thy love.
limitless thy grace, glorious thy saving name.

Let angels sing for
sinners repenting,
prodigals restored,
backsliders reclaimed,
Satan's captives released,
blind eyes opened,
broken hearts bound up,
the despondent cheered,
the self-righteous stripped,
the formalist driven from a refuge of lies,
the ignorant enlightened,
and saints built up in their holy faith.

I ask great things of a great God.

 Re: The Great God

I love "the Valley of Vision" - I picked up a leather bound copy a couple of years back, and I was greatly humbled by the solemn prayers of these godly saints.

Thanks for posting that.

I just go that small leather bound copy also.. and am blessed to pray along and especially listen in with some of these old great saints and how they prayed and sought God. There is much to be learnt from the past generations of men that not only knew about God but knew Him personally and revered Him as such.

 Re:

Amen Greg, Amen!

The Deeps

Lord Jesus, give me a deeper repentance,
a horror of sin,
a dread of its approach.
Help me chastely to flee it and jealously to resolve that my heart shall be Thine alone.

Give me a deeper trust,
that I may lose myself to find myself in Thee, the ground of my rest,
the spring of my being.
Give me a deeper knowledge of Thyself as saviour, master, lord, and king.
Give me deeper power in private prayer, more sweetness in Thy Word, more steadfast grip on its truth.
Give me deeper holiness in speech, thought, action,
and let me not seek moral virtue apart from Thee.

Plough deep in me, great Lord, heavenly husbandman,
that my being may be a tilled field,
the roots of grace spreading far and wide,
until Thou alone art seen in me,
Thy beauty golden like summer harvest,
Thy fruitfulness as autumn plenty.

I have no master but Thee,
no law but Thy will,
no delight but Thyself,
no wealth but that Thou givest,
no good but that Thou blessest,
no peace but that Thou bestowest.
I am nothing but that Thou makest me.
I have nothing but that I receive from Thee.
I can be nothing but that grace adorns me.
Quarry me deep, dear Lord, and then fill me to overflowing with living water.

- Also taken from "the valley of vision"

"Plough deep in me" - amen and amen.

 Re: Valley of Vision

I have this little book also. My favorite is "The Valley of Vision". ;-)

I just saw a big book of puritan devotionals at the christian bookstore yesterday. I think I am going to pick it up also.

"Valley of Vision"

LORD, HIGH and HOLY, MEEK AND LOWLY,
Thou hast brought me to the valley of vision,
where I live in the depths but see thee in the heights;
hemmed in by mountains of sin I behold thy glory.
Let me learn by paradox
that the way down is the way up,
that to be low is to be high,
that the broken heart is the healed heart,
that the contrite spirit is the rejoicing spirit,
that the repenting soul is the victorious soul,
that to have nothing is to possess all,
that to bear the cross is to wear the crown,
that to give is to receive
that the valley is the place of vision.
LORD, in the daytime stars can be seen from the deepest wells,
and the deeper the wells the brighter thy stars shine;
Let me find thy light in my darkness,
thy life in my death,
thy joy in my sorrow,
thy grace in my sin,
thy riches in my poverty,
thy glory in my valley.

Isn't it awesome how God leads us to gleam truth from all ages even from those old puritans. I have been really blesed by digging into some old puritan works, they are very exhasitive but taking a small amount at a time will prove very beneficial I believe. William Gurnall is great also with the volume "a complete christian armour".

I have heard so many good things about title. I would love to take a week off from work and absorb it - 1100 pages - whew! But from everything I have heard it is solid gold cover to cover.

Yes it is a lengthy volume and it IS very quotable. I believe gurnall is one of the most quotable puritans. I actually saw a small volume last night published by 'sole gloria' with just excerpts and quotes from the large gurnall work. It would definetly be worthwhile to get a small volume that takes some gems out. It would take a long time to dig through 1100 pages of his writing :-o

 Re: The Valley of Vision

Greetings everyone. I just recieved a copy of this 'little book' also. So far I have found treasure on every page I turn! Greg, one of the first prayers I turned to, if not the first was The Great God. I too wanted to share it here after reading it! After a little bit of searching I found this thread and so perhaps I can share another prayer from this work which I find expressive of my own need and want

The Broken Heart

O Lord,

No day of my life has passed that has not
proved me guilty in thy sight.
Prayers have been uttered from a
prayerless heart;
Praise has been often praiseless sound;
My best services are filthy rags.
Blessed Jesus, let me find a covert in thy appeasing wounds.
Though my sins rise to heaven thy merits soar
above them;
Though unrighteousness weighs me down to hell,
thy righteousness exalts me to thy throne.
All things in me call for my rejection,
All things in thee plead my acceptance.
I appeal from the throne of perfect justice
to thy throne of boundless grace.
Grant me to hear thy voice assuring me:
that by thy stripes I am healed,
that thou wast bruised for my iniquities,
that thou hast been made sin for me
that I might be righteous in thee,
that my grievous sins, my manifold sins,
are all forgiven,
buried in the ocean of thy concealing blood.
I am guilty, but pardoned,
lost, but saved,
wandering, but found,
sinning, but cleansed.
Give me perpetual broken-heartedness,
Keep me always clinging to thy cross,
Flood me every moment with descending grace,
Open to me the springs of divine knowledge,
sparkling like crystal,
flowing clear and unsullied
through my wilderness of life.
