 The Untold Story

I thought that some of the folks on the forum might enjoy this Christmas ballad which I wrote many years ago.

The Untold Story

The evening sun was sinking o'er the hill;
The busy world prepared for its repose;
The bird that warbled all the day was still,
But from somewhere a purer song arose.
Within a solitary garden place
A maiden sang in sweet, melodious tone
A joyful song of gratitude and praise
To God for all the kindness He had shown.
Her heart could only throb with joy, for she
Was soon to wed a man, strong, caring, good,
Whose love for her was true as love could be -
Then suddenly her singing ceased - there stood
An angel form before her, "Mary,hail!
Blessed are you of God!" Thus did he greet,
But when he saw her face, wide-eyed and pale,
He gently said, "Fear not."Deep peace,so sweet
And tranquil calmed the trembling in her breast.
Then told the messenger how God's Own Son
She would bring forth and all would call her blest.
She said, "Thus to God's handmaid be it done."
What faith and courage did the girl display!
She knew not if her lover or her kin
Would understand, or casting her away,
Would mocking, say the child was born in sin.

It was what seemed a calm and peaceful night;
The stars shone brightly o'er a world at rest;
But far removed from sleep's pure, sweet delight,
Wild chaos raged within a young man's breast
His strong, lean frame, so firmly nerved before,
Now shook convulsively - that which did cheer
And gladden all his day could cheer no more -
The mem'ry pierced his being like a spear!
In prostrate form at length he bowed in prayer.
"Oh, God! How can this thing be true?" cried he.
He groped for words. A mountain of despair
Weighed on him as he paused on bended knee.
His anguished voice resumed to pray. "Have I
Not followed where did lead Your gracious Hand?
Then why did this great woe befall? Oh why?
Am I deceived? I cannot understand!
Less would I fear the dagger of the foe!
I would not lose composure at his scorn!
Less would I dread the famine's dearth to know!
The pain of cruel disease I could have borne!
But woe! To find the one I love untrue,
Who seemed to be so pure and undefiled!
Each thought of her brought joy to me anew;
Her manner was so gentle and so mild!
Oh, how could one who seemed so true betray?
Or eyes which looked so innocent deceive?
How could my faith lead me so far astray?
How can I drink this cup which I receive?
It will not leave my mind - it haunts me so,
That last, sweet look - those tearful, pleading eyes!
How can I cease to love? One thing I know,
Lord, you are true - with You my future lies."
He ceased to pray and on his bed reclined;
No more so heavy did his burden seem,
And soon sweet sleep engulfed his weary mind -
Then lo! He heard an angel in a dream!
The words he spoke wrought peace in Joseph's mind.
"You need not fear the thing which you believed.
Jesus His Name, the Saviour of mankind,
The Son of God is in her womb conceived."

Their love, so soon within the fire tried
Gleamed brighter, far than gold so pure and fine.
For gold, by work of men is purified.
But by the touch of God their love did shine!

The two had slowly traveled all the day,
But when the weary wife could walk no more,
His strong arms carried her along the way
Until, at last the lengthy trek was o'er.
To face her scorning kin she could not bear
Without her loving husband by her side,
And so she joined his travel with a prayer
To God that for all things He would provide.
The shades of night were darkening the sky;
No other trav'lers walked along the road.
They shared a worry as the inn drew nigh
In which they hoped to make the night's abode.
They waited, knocking long upon the door.
At last the keeper's balding head appeared.
They heard his heavy foot stomp on the floor,
And realized the thing that they had feared.
"No room!" he croaked. Upon the two he stared.
The ice of winter seemed to glaze his eye.
"Such fools!" he muttered - then as though he cared,
He pointed to a cattle shed nearby.
Think you that it was easy in that hour
To still believe that somehow God could care?
How great their faith in God's almighty power
Which kept their hearts from sinking in despair!
How could they know that in that very shed
Their souls would soon be filled with joy, untold?
The Child of Heaven in a manger bed!
The shepherds come to worship and behold!

*****

A widow, weeping stood before a cross.
Her face, still lovely, wore the lines which years
And cares had carved. But now her woe and loss
Sent down her pallid cheeks a flood of tears.
No more could Joseph's arms her comfort be,
And now her souls delight, the Holy Son,
Was suff'ring, dying, bleeding on a tree
Condemned by men for deeds He had not done.
What joy had filled her breast to see the lad
Grow up a man - so loving, true and wise -
Who wrought the works of God - but now He bled -
How could she bear the sight before her eyes?
Once more she looked into His eyes -they moved -
Fixed upon hers and seemed to cast a spell.
Such Love! Deep Love! Love as He only loved!
They seemed to tell her that all would be well.

*****

When He arose at last she understood
God's work of grace so often hid before.
She bowed and worshiped. Truly God is good!
And to His Name be glory evermore!

*****

All those who do great things for God, below,
Must sometime walk the way of human woe.
God leads no Christian through the valley, deep,
But sends His angel, too, his foot to keep.
Hell wastes no breath on lazy, lukewarm souls,
But vents its rage on him whom God controls.
God cannot use him for tomorrow's fray
Who, cow'ring, leaves the battlefield today.
And so, take courage, friend, for God is true.
Trust till the storm is past and light breaks through!
