Fornication and Adultery: Sex Outside of Marriage

Fornication and Adultery: Sex Outside of Marriage

A thought occurred to me. What if we gave newly-married couples the same advice and solutions about sex-outside-of-marriage that we give newly-dating teen couples?

"O.K., we know you're going to have sex outside of marriage, so just use protection; you don't want to get pregnant. You don't want to interrupt your education or jeopardize your careers."

Can't you just see the bride getting that injection under her skin so she can have safe-adultery, or the groom with pocketfuls of condoms for those occasional trysts at the office.

Sound ridiculous? Yet, we prepare teens for "dating" and "sleeping together" by encouraging promiscuity, offering condoms and birth control pills as a solution to the "problem." The message is: "It's not sex outside of marriage that should be prevented, but pregnancy."

So, what prevents married couples from committing adultery? A vow...before God. Is it unreasonable to ask the same of the young dating teens?

Hearing recent news of numerous teen pregnancies and listening to suggested solutions started this mental rumination. The subject of teen pregnancy hits close to home for me in many ways: eleven years of teaching 15 year olds, two oldest grandchildren will be 15 this year, and the experience of raising three teens.

Some say the answer is moral education. Just don't have sex before marriage. Stay pure. Be a virgin. Save yourself for marriage. Use self-control. Taking the moral high ground, in and of itself, will not prevent premarital sex or adultery.

The Bible is not silent on this: lust of the flesh, fornication, adultery, concupiscence, inordinate affection, lust of the eyes, lasciviousness, just to name a few. When are we going to offer solutions from the Bible for our teens? Do they even know what those words mean?

Education. I'm an educator. When will we return to the Bible to educate our children using God's words? When will we tell them that the Holy Spirit will come and take up residence in them when they ask for forgiveness of their sins, believe in their heart that Jesus bore their sins, and accept forgiveness? Then, and only then, will they have the power, grace, and mercy to resist temptation, lust, and sex before marriage.

These precious young teens are having babies. The problem is not the baby. The solution is not protected-sex.

The answer is a loving God who sent His only Son to take upon Himself the sins of us all. The solution is sharing this message, the Gospel, the "good news"...you are forgiven. Take your vows between you and God to stay pure in body, mind, soul, and heart. He will sustain you.

Tell them.
