Why parables? Isaiah's commission is the key

We have likely heard men speak about what we should personally learn and apply from Isaiah's experience of seeing God high and lifted up. These messages normally focus upon our need to see God's glory in order to produce godly humility in us. This is a wonderful perspective with powerful implications.

While this is true, Jesus referred to Isaiah's vision for a different purpose altogether. Jesus pointed to Isaiah's vision and commission to explain why He spoke to the people in parables.

If we really want to grasp Jesus' own answer, may I suggest we revisit Isaiah's vision and commission. If you are led to do so, let me suggest ONE key word that must not be overlooked - "THIS" - as in "go and tell THIS people." The word "THIS" is used three times in Isaiah's commission.

If we miss seeing the correlation between "THIS" people and the message Isaiah was commissioned to speak to "them," we will fail to grasp why Jesus chose this event to answer His disciples' question.

"THIS" people was the generation living during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah. The record of "THIS" people is found in II Chronicles. Another place, where the lives of "this" people is summarized, is found in Isaiah chapter 1.

Once we see the implications of what type of people "this" people were, we will then be enabled to understand why Jesus spoke in parables.

May the Lord give His insight to those asking and seeking the same questions the disciples were asking - "Why do you speak to the people in parables?"
