 DIS-ABLED TO BE EN-ABLED...

TEXT: 5:29-30

"And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from
thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should
perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. And
if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee:
for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish,
and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell."(#kjv)

#INTRODUCTION
Here we see a man that would make heaven; but his right eye and hand might prevent him from this very glorious eternal end. It is superfluous to go on a voyage of argument against the all-importance of the eye and hand: these are extremely important for a proper existence. Though thus important, these parts of his body might stand on his way to heaven.

So that which are germane to this man's existence might be the cause of him losing his eternal soul to hell. How a highly esteemed thing could be a clog on the wheel of our spiritual progress! These parts are not sinful in themselves, rather they are ordained by God for the purpose of proper functioning!

Every part of the body is useful to another part: the usefulness of a part may depend solely on another part. So, self-dependency and self-sufficiency are not a welcome doctrine in the government of the body. Yet, a member that causes offence would be cut off! So, even though not sinful but rather important, yet they can make a man to sin.

Observe these: the hand and eye are God's gift and blessing: They fulfil the will of God and assist a man to live well yet they can make a man to sin. How is it so? Even God's gifts and blessings can be hijacked by the devil as instruments of iniquity. There is nothing of God that the devil cannot use to achieve his wicked aim.

If God gives a man silver and gold, he could turn same to an instrument of oppression by the aid of the evil one. A God-given talent could suddenly be turned over to the enemy for use. The point here is that as these hand and eye could become means of temptation, so also things which are equally important can be manipulated for a man's down fall.

Let us consider two phrases from our scriptural text, namely,

"...if thy right hand offend thee...if thy right eye offend thee..."
"...if your right hand causes you to sin... If your right eye causes
you to sin..."(#Holman)

The king James version uses the phrase "offend thee" while Holman uses "causes you to sin" These two block of words mean one and the same thing. Whatever makes a man to sin, offends him. Whatever offends a man might make him to sin. The hand and eye can offend a man-could cause him to sin.

A thing not inherently sinful can make a man to sin, even offends him. Many saints have been offended by their God-given gifts, the gifts have made them sinful in one way or the other. Some have become proud and arrogant after God blessed them.

We should not ignore and be careless about our hand and eye: but should they start offending us, that is, making us sinful, the Lord Jesus has only one advice for us: "pluck it out...cut it off" No mercy, no negotiation with anything that could stand in the way of eternity. Total detachment is the only way.

Thus, if these admonitions are adhered to in the event of any offence from these members, we would have a man whose right hand is cut off or his eye plucked out. He could neither see well or handle things properly. He is dis-able! Why? For what is he so rendered impotent? For what is he considered among men as a man with one hand or one eye? The answer is simple: that he might be enabled to go to heaven. DIS-ABLE TO BE EN-ABLED! To be continued.
