You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. - James 4:4

Though it is so easy to feel at home in the world with its allurements, comforts and enjoyments. Yet this world is not our home and to love the world and seek to find our ultimate rest in it will divorce us from God himself. As the verse says we can even become an enemy of God, what a chilling warning. We cannot love the world and love God equally no matter what modern american christianity tells us. God is jealous and wants our friendship and intimacy and not for us to spend ourselves on things that do not matter.
In the verse before the apostle James speaks of spending our time fulfilling our pleasures with the things of the world. This is not only dangerous but even damning. We are warned of this in 1 Timothy 6. God wants our time, energy and desire to be for him. We are to seek firstly and most importantly of all his kingdom and ways of righteousness and everything else will work out in this short earthly life. We will store us for ourselves eternal reward and a crown. Say no to the world's reward now, live for eternal things and know a crown will be given to you in the end.
