TEXT: LEVITICUS 8:23; 17: 13
"And he slew it; and Moses took of the blood of it, and put it upon the tip of Aaron's right ear, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot."
" For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul."
....MOSES TOOK OF THE BLOOD...AND PUT IT UPON THE THUMB OF HIS RIGHT RIGHT HAND...
A look at the first text under consideration, shows a verse that open with a phrase that foreshadows a crucial new testament concept, the crucification and death of Christ. "And he slew it..." Jesus has been slained! The blood of this slained animal acted as an atonement. In this part of our meditation, we shall be turning our attention to the thumb of the high priest...God needed to address the issue of the thumb of his priest before he sent him to serve Him and the people. Note that the blood was applied on the thumb of the right hand of the would-be priest in our passage.
For us to know the practical application and implication of this sacred act, we would be content to take the liberty to ask ourselves this question: what is the value and the importance of the thumb in our bodly makr up? It is a common knowledge that without the thumb, handling any object is difficult, all attempt to handle objects would be done with serious strain and effort.
Let us imagine ourselves trying to write without our thumb...using a spoon without the thumb or opening a door with a key without the thumb! What a nightmare! No man, whose thumb is deffective or chopped off, can handle anything well...such a man cannot hold anything well. Anything put in his hand would break and definitely ebb away. Imagine Aaron administering the shew bread to his sons without his thumb!
God's man must posses the ability and enablement to handle divine things and matter well: he must be qualified to touch and hand the service of God. Here in this part of our meditation, divine service is what is at stake. The foundational qualification or requisite here is the acceptance of the atoning blood. what therefore qualifies a man to handle divine service is the atoning blood, that is, such a man must have acknowledged the indispensability of the blood of the lamb, slain from the foundation of the earth.
The qualification and the ability to handle divine services come together at the reception of the Lord Jesus. In principle, any man that has turned to the blood of Jesus and deems the same blood as the only ground for any divine transaction, potentialy becomes qualified to minister to God. Hebrews 9:13-14 says:
" For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes
of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the
purifying of the flesh:How much more shall the blood
of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered
himself without spot to God, purge your conscience
from dead works to serve the living God?"
In this passage of the Holy scripture, we see that for a man to serve the living God, his conscience must first be purged from dead works by the blood. We, therefore, take the liberty to say that for God to use any man, He must first address the matter of his conscience via the instrumentality of the blood...he must be purged from his sin...he must be born again.
No wonder, a lot of men that claim that they are called by God find it difficult to handle and maintain divine matters and things. Many shepherds have lost a lot of their sheep. Many pastors lack the ability to keep members...anything left in their hands gets spoilt and runs into decay. Friends, it is time to turn our attention to the atoning blood, let our sins of omission and commission be instantly addressed.
Let me declare the objective truth of God's government here: if any man, in the eyes of God, accepts the atoning blood of Christ, he automatically have in himself the potential to serve God. Atonement comes with this potential. At new birth, we become qualified to handle divine project. Are you saved, has the blood been put on the thumb of your right hand? Then your hand can handle well divine services.
When Adam sinned, all humanity had their thumb chopped off or dried up, with the result that God despised the sacrifice of Cain (his thumb could not bring correct service to God.) But Abel knew the secrate:
"And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock
and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto
Abel and to his offering:"
Abel brought the blood and fat to the alter...this was his success. But in Christ we are made whole, a new and strong thumb is created...all withered thumb are given strength!
At new birth the word of God, which is quick and powerful and sharper than any two-edge sword, actually pieced through the dividing asunder of the souls and spirits and of the born and its marrow of all that are born of God. Our thumbs were infused with marrow at new birth. Ours is a strong thumb because of the blood of Jesus! Praise be to the atoning Lamb of God.
It is the blood that qualified us for any divine assignment! A man whose thumb is chopped off can never stretch out his hand to receive anything...To be continued.
