Dagaari Dioula, Wala of Burkina FasoThe Dagaari Dioula (Wala) live in village settlements that consist of several compounds. The settlements are widely scattered in order to leave room for farming and for each family's herds. A minority of the people follows traditional animistic beliefs, but the majority has adopted the dominant religion of the area: Islam. The animists carve ancestor shrines, animals, gods, and stools; and their religion is centered on deceased ancestors and objects of nature, both of which are worshipped.Ministry ObstaclesThe fear of offending ancestral spirits may keep many from considering a new belief system.Outreach IdeasWorkers need to carry the good news of Jesus to these people in oral form, since translated scripture is not available.
