We know that we have crossed over from death to life because we love our brothers. We also know that anyone not loving his brother is in the darkness and the darkness has blinded him so that he does not know where he is going. Why would any brother be abiding in the darkness? Why would any brother be hating another brother? The answer is simple, for the very same reason that Cain hated his brother Able - "for his own actions were evil, and his brother's were righteous." This is the hidden motive behind all hatred of dear brothers. Men who are disapproved by God will begin to hate those who have His approval. Cain was given a way of escape - "If you do well, will you not be accepted?" But instead of humbling himself and repenting of his evil, he began to despise the righteousness of his brother Abel because it was what exposed his own evil. It was his brother's acceptance by God that made his own rejection more bitter, because it placed the blame of his rejection solely upon his own actions. God does accept those who do well; Abel's acceptance was additional proof of God's willingness to accept true offering. Everyone doing evil hates the light and will not come into the light for fear his deeds will be exposed. The fellowship of brothers must be based upon walking in the light together. "If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another." But once a brother begins to do evil, that fellowship will be broken and he will begin to hate the light in his brother. This is especially true if his brother begins to address the evil he is observing. This is why Jesus was hated. He told His own brothers, the world cannot hate you, but it hates Me, because I testify of it that its works are evil." Everyone doing evil hates those who call their works evil; this is how we know who is walking in the light and who is abiding in the darkness. Those who love the light, come to the light and love their brothers who are in the light; those loving darkness more than the light, begin to hate the light in their brothers. Why else would a brother hate another brother? Everyone hating his brother is abiding in darkness. It is not the hatred towards his brother that caused him to abide in darkness; it is his sin that he is not willing to repent of that causes him to seek out the darkness. He begins to hate his brother only after his brother's righteousness begins to expose his own actions as evil. That's when the thought of destroying his brother finds a place in his heart and "the accuser of the brother" takes him captive to do his will. And the will of the accuser is the destruction of brothers - "he was a murderer from the beginning and there is no truth in him." Satan's war is against the truth, he seeks to kill everyone walking in the truth. Many dear brothers are being destroyed today by those who have surrendered to the spirit of Cain and the accuser of the brethren. In their discouragement, they refuse the way of escape and allow murder to fill their heart. The choice weapon of this crime is the tongue - "with his mouth, the godless destroys his neighbor." One of the ways that I have commonly observed this happening in our day is brothers hating others brothers by calling them "Pharisees". Prayerfully consider whenever you hear someone call another dear brother a "Pharisee" if it is not the spirit of Cain hating righteousness in a dear brother. The person who uses the term "Pharisee" knows the ramification of the accusation. Many a godly brother has been labeled a "Pharisee" by someone operating in the same spirit as Cain. Beware the spirit of Cain. Anyone who is not approved of God because his actions are evil, might refuse to take the proper way of escape by repenting of his sin. This refusal will likely plunge a once sincere brother into a darkness that blinds him. And from this fallen state of spiritual blindness, a man will lash out against the "Abels" in his life with a hateful tongue that seeks to destroy their testimony.
