I received this in my email this morning:Dear Supporter,On Monday 14th March the House of Lords will debate Government proposals for the new 'incitement to religious hatred' law. The House of Commons has already approved the plans. The Christian Institute, along with lawyers, journalists and many other religious and secular groups, believes these proposals are a serious attack on freedom of speech. The Conservative and Liberal Democrat Parties oppose the creation of a new religious hatred offence. You can find more information about the issue at our web site: christian.org.ukThe Government is under enormous pressure to get its legislation through Parliament before the expected dissolution of Parliament in early April because of the calling of a General Election. The religious hatred proposals are contained within the Serious Organised Crime and Police Bill. The Government will doubtless try to pressure the House of Lords into accepting the whole Bill which, apart from this one clause, is generally accepted by all parties and is not controversial. However, if the Lords stands firm, the Government may drop 'religious hatred' in order to save the rest of the Bill.I am writing to ask you to pray for Monday's debate. Please pray: - That Peers will speak firmly and persuasively against the proposals. Pray particularly for Christian Peers Lady O'Cathain and Lady Cox. - That Peers will continue to resist pressure to go along with the proposals. - For Christian Institute staff as they brief Peers on this crucial issue. - That the media would report the issue fairly. - That the Government would drop its religious hatred proposals - permanently.Yours in Christ,Colin Hart DirectorTHE CHRISTIAN INSTITUTE
