Anointed Music Can Bring the Spirit of Prophecy in a Church by Zac Poonen

I want to show you something about prophetic ministry. In 2 Kings 3:15, when Elisha wanted to seek the mind of God so that he could prophesy, he asked for someone to play a harp. As the musician began to play, the hand of the Lord came upon Elisha and he prophesied powerfully. There we see the value of godly music.

I can think of numerous times in my own life when during a time of worship and praise on Sunday mornings the hand of the Lord has come upon me and given me a word that I did not have when I came to the meeting. There was a power in that anointed music that brought the spirit of prophecy upon Elisha.

Even a prophet needs help at times from the musicians. That’s why those who lead the music must be anointed. They must not be just good musicians. They must be anointed and have a good conscience. David appointed singers and musicians, and they had to be anointed. Some of the music-leaders like Asaph wrote twelve wonderful psalms (Psalms 50, 73-83). Two of the music-leaders were called seers (prophets) - Heman (1 Chr.25:5) and Jeduthun (2 Chr.35:15).

So God needs anointed musicians to encourage and support anointed prophets. That’s how the church is built. Some of you may not be called to be prophets; you may be called to be musicians. Be anointed musicians.

I don’t think Elisha would have been inspired that day if the harpist had tried to imitate some worldly style of music. No. There was something heavenly about that music. There is music that is worldly and that which is heavenly. You can sense it when music is heavenly, because it will lift your spirit to worship God. Some music only makes you admire the musicians! You are an anointed musician if you can lead people to worship God and can bring the spirit of prophecy into a meeting.

Amen, I agree entirely. That is why perhaps, truly anointed worship leaders are so few and are opposed and suffer much spiritual war-fare..............bro Frank

 Re:

This gives me rabbit trail to look into when it comes to music in the church and how God can move through it. I do wonder though what does music to do move God to do such things?

I couldn't help but think how many people have ever had a word of knowledge under an integrity or Hosanna type of worship music v. Southern Gospel. (just my achilles heal cheap shot)

 Re:

The first time I heard this way of singing the psalms was in 1993 in Nis, Lewis. The first thought which came to mind was "the priests of Israel".

Here is one for the true American.

Now tell me thats a coincidence?

If I may put in my two cents of experience.

In my personal experience, it is NOT a type of “music” in general that moves God, not at all. The key word that Zac used is “anointed.”

Sadly, it’s like directions; if you've never been there how you can you give other person directions? And it’s the same with worship leaders; how can one who has never worshiped in the Spirit ever be able to lead others to worship in the Spirit. They simply can’t. You have to have been there or at the very least be WILLING to follow the Spirit in order to lead others.

I grew up in a small church where the worship leaders couldn't carry a tune!! LOL But they knew how to sing and enter into the spiritual realm... this is the missing link!! Churches today find the best singers/musicians they can “afford” (not singers who are broken and of a contrite heart = anointed), and they put these paid singers upfront to take people absolutely nowhere, the people who are in need leave in the same conditions they came in.

Does this make sense? I hope I brought forth my heart because this is a HUGE pet peeve of mine.

God bless,
Lisa

 Re:

Hi Lisa,

You are dead on, could not be more correct. It is indeed the anointing. Now that word could spark a thousand debates, but it would change nothing, it is the anointing. I remember, the woman at the church where I got saved, rather large woman, not the best singer, but she was the worship leader for lack of a better phrase, and she played a piano. She was filled with the Holy Spirit and sometimes would give a word in Tongues, not too often. More often than not she would simply play as led, or someone would stand up and begin to sing and she would just pick it and and go with it. Ah , the sweet freedom for the Holy Spirit to be the worship leader. The problem today is that men and woman are " worship leaders," and they have skills to prove it. Typically the best singer with the best degree :(

This woman who is coming from Scotland to help us worship in the meetings in Oklahoma in July, Aileen Gilchrist, who is featured here on Si under Godly music, would be a good example of someone who carries the anonting. Yes a wonderful singer, but most importantly, someone who understands what brother Zac was talking about in the post and is able to yield to the moving and the flow of the Holy Spirit. By the way, we also need preachers and prayer warriors who understand this and can also move with the moving of the Holy Spirit..............bro Frank
