The destruction of Edom and Babylon was one of great magnitude. Jeremiah even compares it to that of Sodom and Gomorrah (50:40). Interesting Scripture jumps out at me in regards to these two cities: 50:44-46 - 44"Behold, like a lion comping up from the thicket of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make them run away from her, and I will appoint over her whomever I choose. For who is like me? Who will summon me? What shepherd can stand before me? 45 Therefore hear the plan that the LORD has made against Babylon, and the purposes that he has formed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely the little ones of their flock shall be dragged away; surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate. 46 At the sound of the capture of Babylon the earth shall tremble, and her cry shall be heard among the nations."This Scripture is repeated verbatim for Edom in 49:19-21. I believe the little ones were dragged away for the purpose of awakening the fold. I believe God uses drastic measures for the purposes "awakening" the greater people. It is a ginormous hurdle to overcome, but in doing so, we have the joy of His comfort afterwards. His comfort is clearly seen in the setting described in 50:33-34. This peace is seen after the fall of Babylon.
