 Who is "The LORD"?

Who is The LORD in these verses?

Isa 41:4 Who hath wrought and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I the LORD, the first, and with the last; I am He.

Rev 1:8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

Rev 21:1-7 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
And He that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And He said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
And He said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be My son.

Rev 21:23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.

Isa 60:19,20 The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the LORD shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory.
Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the LORD shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.

Isaiah 25:8,9 He will swallow up death in Victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of His people shall He take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it. And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He will save us: this is the LORD; we have waited for Him, we will be glad and rejoice in His salvation.

Isa 30:18,19 And therefore will the LORD wait, that He may be gracious unto you, and therefore will He be exalted, that He may have mercy upon you: for the LORD is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for Him. For the people shall dwell in Zion at Jerusalem: thou shalt weep no more: He will be very gracious unto thee at the voice of thy cry; when He shall hear it, He will answer thee.

Eze 48:35 It was round about eighteen thousand measures: and the name of the city from that day shall be, "The LORD is there."

Jer 3:17 At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the LORD; and all the nations shall be gathered unto it, to the Name of the LORD, to Jerusalem: neither shall they walk any more after the imagination of their evil heart.

Jer 33:16 In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely: and this is the name wherewith she shall be called, "The LORD our righteousness".

Zec 2:10-13 Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the LORD. And many nations shall be joined to the LORD in that day, and shall be my people: and I will dwell in the midst of thee, and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto thee. And the LORD shall inherit Judah His portion in the holy land, and shall choose Jerusalem again. Be silent, O all flesh, before the LORD: for He is raised up out of His holy habitation.

Mic 4:1-5 But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it. And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and He will teach us of His ways, and we will walk in His paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. And He shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the LORD of hosts hath spoken it. For all people will walk every one in the name of his god,
and we will walk in the name of the LORD our God for ever and ever.

Zec 8:3 Thus saith the LORD; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and the mountain of the LORD of hosts the holy mountain.

Zec 14:3-9 Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. And His feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with Thee. And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark: but it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light. And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be. And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and His Name One.

Isa 2:2-4 And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD'S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and He will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in His paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the Word of the LORD from Jerusalem. And He shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

Mal 3:16-18 Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon His Name. And they shall be Mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.

 Re: Who is "The LORD"?

Hi Jesus-IS-God,
I'm afraid I don't have much to contribute to your post but reading the verses you have here and they make me smile. The Lord is LORD! Reading of His greatness causes a great welling up within me.
All I can think of is Matt 22;
While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?”

They said to Him, “The Son of David.”
He said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying:
‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool”’?
If David then calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his Son?”

and John 10:29-31

" My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. I and My Father are one. Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him."

 Re:

Dear Onemite, I had the same reaction to these verses as you are expressing. "His greatness causes a great welling up within me." Amen!
As I found them by following Torrey's 'Treasury of Scripture Knowledge' in the e-sword, cross-referencing the verses one by one - I started with Rev 20:1-7 and was so amazed to find first, "the light in that city is The LORD" in the O.T..
Reading the Old Testament cross-references, I couldn't help but see how the Jews would read these promises, from the time that they were first given them and was absolutely awed.

Mar 12:29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is,
"Hear, O Israel; The LORD our God is one LORD" -- [Deut 6:4]

Joh 14:7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
Joh 14:8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.
Joh 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?

The cross-reference to these - Isaiah 9:6

Glory to The Lord God of hosts!

Just Awed.

 Re:

Ann,

You ask, ' Who is the Lord'?

In the old testament it says more times than one, ' 'The LORD He is God,'
' The LORD He is God ' !
The LORD,...meaning He Rules ...the LORD above all LORDS.
God is invisable,...He is Spirit,..He is the Word,.....He is the Spirit / Word ...Breath,Voice,..and since He is LORD,(the LORD He is God ),...As we know whatever He speaks,it is done. if it be to bring the world and all that
Is in it,into being,....or to speak a healing for someone. Like you said,He is
Almighty.

This Wonderful invisible Living Spirit / Word overshadowed Mary,...went into her womb,...a Miracal ! God, is Jesus' Father,as it is told in the scriptures many, many times, he is God' only begotten Son.

We know we have a natural father,...when we are born again of the Spirit ,...The Living Spirit / Word then comes to live inside of us,
..and then we have a new name and a Spiritual Father....

'And His Name is called, the Word of God' ( Rev.19:13 ),..that comes to Live,...or to give us His Life from within, out.

God, who is Spirit,is everywhere. Paul said in Acts 17:27,( Paul was saying,
to these people on Mars Hill ), ' That they should seek the Lord,if perhaps
they might feel after Him,though He is not far from every one of us. '

Ann I read you threads and think,...you are so knowledgeable about SO
many subjects,..That I am not formiluar with at all.
And I want you to know how I appreciate this in you.

I do hope you will not be offended with how I see the Father, the Son'
...so when we see Him, we see the Father, the Living Spirit Word.
And in that,we truly SEE the Father,..

When Jesus ask Peter, ' Who do ye say that I am ' ?, I know you are
Formiluar with that verse, and Peter say 'Thou art the Christ, the Son o f the Living God,..and Jesus said, flesh and blood hath not revealed that unto
But the Holy Spirit'...and Jesus was very pleased with Peters being able to see in the Spirit, the revealed Word of God.

I know I have said more than you ask,but.....isn't it such a joy to commune
about the Lord ?

Be blessed Ann,
elizabeth

Who is The LORD in these verses?

Great topic JIG! This right here is the whole crux of the matter.

The LORD (all caps LORD is Jehovah) is the eternal Son of God in every verse posted.

Jesus (the eternal Son of God) is Jehovah!

In His full title the LORD Jesus Christ:

LORD represents the Eternal Son in the OT
Jesus represents the Eternal Son in His earthly ministry
Christ represents the Eternal Son after His ascension

 Re:

Yes, LORD, "with all capitals" Strong's # H3068, - YHVH = HaShem to the Jews that won't pronounce His Name.

And Christians do believe that Elohim ['God' in the OT] is a plural masculine noun.

The Name "LORD God" is found *519 times in the KJV O.T..

Example = Gen 2:4 These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the *LORD God* made the earth and the heavens

The 'phrase' - "LORD thy God" is found 257 times in the KJV O.T.. ... Just a few here ...

Exo 20:2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

Exo 20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me

Exo 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Exo 20:10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates

Exo 20:12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

Exo 23:19 The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring into the house of the LORD thy God.

~

Deu 6:1,2 Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it: that thou mightest fear the LORD thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.

Deu 6:4,5 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God [is] one LORD: and thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

"The Absolute Co-Equality of The Three In ONE" ...

Isa 45:5 I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me

Isa 45:18 For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.

Isa 45:5,6 I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me: that they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else.

Translated from what Joe brought forth with the capitals - the Hebrew is saying in the O.T. - "LORD God" equals Jesus Elohim.

Not "Jesus Only" but "GOD Only".
Finding all the cross-references to Rev 19:12 is exciting as well. In fact, finding all the cross-references to the whole of the Revelation is Very exciting. Praise The LORD GOD of Glory!

 Re:

The all caps in the KJV whether GOD or LORD are variations of Jehovah which is the personal name of God the Son.

The TSK is a great resource, coupled with the TTT below and a concordance are the only books required to study the Bible.

Beginning study here

http://www.bible-topics.com/Christ-is-God.html

There is also a good KJV Bible available with words of the Son (LORD ) in red in the OT to match the words of the Son (Christ) in red in the NT. It really helps bring Christ alive in the OT and make the seamless transition between the OT and NT.

 Re:

You know Joe, my husband majored in the languages, so I had every Lexicon and Concordance, etc at my disposal for 30 yrs and GOD has been so very gracious to me, that I could/can study for 16 hours a day and not get tired, By His Grace Alone - Glory to The Name Above All Names Only - and I 'thank you' for bringing up The Name in capitals!!!
Not too many Christians know that, and now whenever they read the O.T., they will see Him.
I am a Jewish Christian and GOD brought me to the State that I live in now to speak to the Jewish people here.
"New Yawk" :) is called 'little Israel' and it wasn't until I listened to Art enough times and tawked to enough of my neighbors before I realized why He brought me here - but before that point, I cried and cried to go back to 'the Bible belt'. Amazing Grace, Alone!
GOD Bless you too.

 Re:

Hi Elizabeth. Of course I'm not offended by your post. I'm blessed to see it. I read and enjoy your posts as well. I've been following your thread on The Kingdom.

His Word is true! "Thou art the Christ, The Son of The Living GOD! Amen - Peter got it!
Mat 16:17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

Sis, Yes - it 'is' a joy to commune about The LORD!
You probably have heard of the hymns by Isaac Watts. He prayed to understand the Trinity - a very long prayer and that prayer was coming from his inner-most being. Knowing the hymns that he had written, my heart, soul and spirit went out to him as I read his prayer. All I could think was, "GOD is Amazing!" I'm sure Isaac Watts is at peace with what he Knows now :)
I felt the depths of his prayer some yrs back before I found his prayer and it started with me, as I said, with Rev 21:1-7. It was as if I couldn't get away from those verses and not because of my own curiosity. It was a time that seemed to "do it" for me, as best as I know how to say it.
The link that Joe left about His Deity is really good. Years back, just after the time that I went through those long hours of craving and searching with those verses, it seemed like the dam broke and the verses from the Old and New were coming from His Word like Living Waters - so Yes, I do know what you mean about not tiring when looking into and for HIM.
This week, the verses that kept coming to me were ... John 6:67 Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? Joh 6:68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

Those verses gave me strength and it fought off an attack that GOD allowed, by Him asking me "Will you go away?" and verse 68 came to mind and not of myself. Glory to GOD!

Sis, I know we're going to go through a lot, future tense - but I know if we keep seeking Him for Who He is - as in "Who is JESUS?" - that we'll definitely be given the strength to get through Anything - When our eyes are off of ourselves and back onto Him and Him alone - and I think you also know that as well. 1Chron 16:10 Glory ye in His Holy Name: let the heart of them Rejoice that seek the LORD.
GOD Bless you mightily, And thank you for your posts!

 Re: Who is "The LORD"?

When looking at Torrey's Treasury of Scriptural Knowledge, which is a 'cross-referencing' aide in e-sword, we don't get the full impact that this is an actual book that he worked on for only GOD knows how long. The print in the book is so small, because he found cross-references for pretty much every verse in the Bible. Amazing!
Then he also did another book with the verses split under 'topics' and of course, that's far from all that this humble man did.
He loved and knew the Value of The Word and loved humans enough to spend countless hours dividing up the Word for others so that they could study. What a task. What a love.

The posts on this thread are not exhaustive. The cross-referencing of Rev 21:1-7 is not complete in the OP. But seeing "The LORD" saying the same things in the Old Testament that He also wrote through John is the marvel of it all. There's no way to get bored with the Bible. The cross-referencing goes on and on and on, besides any word studies within those verses.

I pray we see the Wealth that we have with our computers to do what Torrey and others had done but with pen and paper. We have it so easy now. I have the TSK in book form - but since getting a computer - I'm overwhelmed by the ease of doing a Bible Study compared to what men like Torrey went through or what the writers of The Bible went through with parchment and ink wells and quills to give us His Word.

The LORD 'is' The Word of GOD.

Continuing on and keeping in mind what Old Joe brought to the table - the truth that "LORD" [Yehovah] and "GOD" [Yehovih], when written in capitals is Who we know right now as "Jesus" - but we could also say that regardless of whether The Name of GOD is in capitals or not - The LORD our God is 'One' LORD - He is GOD, The First and The Last - The One True GOD and the less we divide Him in the verses shown in the OP, the better we'll grasp His Majesty.
As we glance through the O.T. - we'll begin to not only see where and how His Name was capitilized but how His Name is One with those that aren't capitalized. :) Praise GOD!

Continuing cross-referencing ...

Rev 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

Isa 25:8 He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it.

---------

Rev 21:3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.

Eze 37:27,28 My tabernacle also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God, and they shall be my people. And the heathen shall know that I the LORD do sanctify Israel, when My sanctuary shall be in the midst of them for evermore.
