 Latest NIV Bible Translation Clearer on Homosexual Sins, Says Theologian


The latest version of the popular NIV Bible translation has had its verses on homosexuality reworded, making them clearer in denouncing the practice, a theologian who helped with the translation says.

These clarifications include the verse in 1 Corinthians 6:9, where the 1984 NIV version uses the phrase “homosexual offenders,” while the 2011 translation changes the phrase to "men who have sex with men."

The Committee on Bible Translation, chaired by Dr. Douglas J. Moo, who also serves as Wessner Chair of Biblical Studies at Wheaton College, released the 2011 New International Version last year. ...

sounds like they are ok with women having sex with other women with the wording they chose....

...except, perhaps, the various revisions of the KJV from 1611 until the ones that are used today that were finished in either 1769 or 1850?

*EDIT: Compare the following Scripture verse mentioned by Greg between the various versions:

I Corinthians 6:9

"Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind," (KJV).

"Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor [a]effeminate, nor homosexuals," (NASB).

"Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders" (NIV 1984).

"Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men[a]" (NIV)

[a]1 Corinthians 6:9 The words men who have sex with men translate two Greek words that refer to the passive and active participants in homosexual acts (NIV footnote).

Personally, I think that mentioning the word "homosexual" or the term "men who have sex with men" (along with the explanatory footnote) are clearer to most readers than the phrase "abusers of themselves with mankind" (as used in the KJV).

It depends if you are studying the Bible under your own strength, or if you are leaning on the Holy Spirit.

As for me, I trust the Spirit above my flawed, sinful self.

It's a good thing that there has never been a single Spirit filled believer in history who has ever had a problem understanding the way the KJV words things.

Sarcasm? I hope so....

Just recently I gained an understanding of a phrase in the OT that used to vex me - it made no sense and it dovetails right in with a similar one in Hebrews, I think.

I just find it increasingly condescending that if someone can't seem to understand everything about a particular translation (especially if it uses English in a different way than we do today), that somehow they're lacking the Spirit's guidance.

There have been all sorts of funny doctrines (pre-Adamite creation for one example) created, believed, and followed by God fearing men, simply because they didn't understand the English being used, and took it to mean something different.

I said: "It depends if you are studying the Bible under your own strength, or if you are leaning on the Holy Spirit."

Do you mean, how do I know the Spirit is leading me?

I did not say this gave me 100% understanding of what is written. I understand what God reveals to me at that stage in my walk with Jesus.

If I do not understand something that does not stop my faith or belief in Jesus as the Son of God. I still press on and know if the point is important for my salvation God will make it clear.
