True humility is so contrary to the ways and systems of our physical world. Even the word "servant" does not bring a visual picture of one we highly esteem and emulate. Servants to most of the world are there to "serve them", meaning do what I say, how I tell you, and when to do it. The world system venerates those in power and authorty who give orders to servants expecting instant obedience. To the average American man or woman, becoming the servant of another is not a position to seek but one to be avoided, if possible. Employment may be the common lot of most people in our country, yet we avoid the word "servant" and title ourselves as "valued employees." Not really true - we are servants to those who have the economic power to control our daily labor. Most reject the title of "servant" -- and who really strives to be "humble"? - what reward or gain is there in being labeled a "humble servant"? Now from the perspective of and biblical attitude exampled by our Lord Jesus, who we claim to follow, a "humble servant" is one who listens, follows, and obeys the One who he declares to be his Master. As followers of Jesus Christ, we are to be daily conformed into His image and likeness - a humble servant. Do we know those within the Body of Christ who are living examples of these character traits? We may know some, but do we want to be like them? It all depends upon your spiritual attitude! If we truly choose and desire to be like the Lord Jesus, who was the highest example of "humility" and being a "servant" - will our Lord see us in this manner? God is not mocked and cannot be fooled. And we know in our hearts if we meet these biblical requirements of true followers of Jesus. Do others see you as you really are?? Most of us have never been taught within the world's system or even within Christian church environments on the value of being "humble" or being a true "servant." The world rewards with power, fame, fortune, and great authority those who push themselves to the front of the line in position, influence, etc. over others - economically, politically, and even within family structures. Pride and arrogance lead the list of those qualities most admired and respected within this world system, and sometimes, sadly, within Christian churches. Will we followers of our Lord Jesus ever see life from His perspective? If He modeled a lifestyle of humility and servanthood, why don't we value these character virtues the same? A question of heart motive and intent. As we mature as followers of Jesus, we should become more aware of our attitudes when asked about our own lifestyles - are we "humble" and are we "servants"? Ask your family, ask your friends, ask your neighbors -- ask Jesus ! The truth may be difficult to accept, but it's the reason we are still here living on planet earth: to learn to become "humble" and to be true "servants" to our God and fellow man. The path is long, the journey is rough, and the struggles are real, but the fruit of obedience shall be eternal when our Lord states: "Well Done, my good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of my Father's Kingdom." In essence, we shall be like Him. Hallelujah !
