 poem: the heart (ezekiel 11:19-21)

when i look out into this world and contemplate on the things created
i see an unspoken order and harmony that tells me that You’ve made it

for the stars and planets obey Your every Word
even the rocks and trees and every single bird

but one thing i see that doesn’t fit the mold
this thing called the human heart with a mind of it’s own

an object so beautiful when found in obedience
but so wretched and blind when found in disobedience

Lord, what is this heart that You’ve fashioned with Your hands
a choice to obey or disobey Your Words and Commands

but i guess there can be no love without a willing exchange
on the part of both parties involved in this relational interchange

but what is there that we as dust can possibly offer to You
for whether in obedience or disobedience there is nothing we can add to You

but i now realize that it was never meant to be fair
this exchange called Love of which none can compare

God the Word and Writer and we merely whats written
for You are the Father and we are the children

for You have not asked for cold obedience
even if done with dutiful expedience

but what You have required is a heart stirred with passion
to give you EVERYTHING and not just religious action

“for you delight not in sacrifice, or else i would bring it”
“but the sacrifice of the Lord is a broken heart and a contrite spirit”

and “far be it from me to sacrifice to the Lord that costs me nothing”
for anything less dear beloved and it is not truly God you are loving

but a figment of your own imagination which is simply idolatry
and not of the One True Savior who was crucified on the tree

for the only possible response to such True Love is complete and total surrender
of your heart and soul and mind and strength all given to Him forever

so i end with one last question
does your heart yearn for Him or do you thrive in transgression

“for the Lord knows those who belong to Him”
“and so let everyone who names the Name of the Lord turn and depart from sin”

“And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, that they may walk in my statutes and keep my rules and obey them. And they shall be my people, and I will be their God. But as for those whose heart goes after their detestable things and their abominations, I will bring their deeds upon their own heads, declares the Lord God.”
