 Do not be naïve

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.
1John 4:1

A great deal of deception could be avoided if we only obeyed this verse. The Bible has much to say about testing so as to avoid being deceived (1). We are told that we must not be naïve or gullible, particularly when it comes to spiritual things. How do we know that we are following the Spirit of God? Is it just about good intentions? Two men will fight in the church thinking that God is on their side, bringing about a church split. Many people have been deceived by mere feelings, thinking that the Holy Spirit was telling them to do one thing or another. Some have thereby even committed murder; others have brought destruction in their family or in the church. How do we know that we are following the Spirit of God?

Here is a more difficult question: Are you willing to admit that you may be deceived? Let me put it this way: Are you willing to admit that you have been deceived for some time? Will you then humble yourself in repentance, or harden your heart against the truth?

Could it be that if we tested our actions according to Scripture, we would find that many a time, we have followed a path that is contrary to the Spirit of Christ? Strife instead of peace. Lies instead of truth. Pride instead of humility. Division instead of unity. Hatred instead of love. Bitterness instead of forgiveness. Lashing out instead of forbearing. But, we had a good reason for saying what we said, doing what we did… or did we? Would the Holy Spirit lead you that way? Would the Holy Spirit make you deny Christ in word or deed?

May God be pleased to convict us against our sinful will. May He receive glory at our expense. May He be glorified in our brokenness, for He is close to the lowly, not the haughty.

Love in Christ Jesus,
