Jerusalem was in ruins; Daniel himself and his people were captives in a foreign land; the sanctuary of God built by Solomon was desolate because the people called by His name had sinned, and committed iniquity, and done wickedly, and rebelled (Dan. 9:5). Worst of all, the problem then was the same problem facing us today: Nobody was praying about it!
Today, more than two millenniums later, our beloved homeland of America is inviting the righteous judgment of the same holy God judgment which by any standard is long overdue. And because sentence...is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil (Eccl. 8:11).
Rebellion against constituted authority has infected every area of society. Moral weakness and flagrant dishonesty among public officials is so prevalent that judgment is turned away backward, and justice standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter. Yea, truth faileth... (Isa. 59:14-15).
The sexual revolution now produces untold numbers of unmarried teenage pregnancies yearly. Soul and body-destroying drugs are bringing spiritual and physical disaster to increasing multitudes. None of the proposed solutions for inflation, unemployment, tax reduction, or energy conservation can possibly rectify the moral and spiritual disintegration of this nation. Crusades and movements to influence legislation against pornography, homosexuality, abortion, the drug traffic and other crimes are laudable but ultimately futile, treating symptoms instead of the disease.
Can it be that God is waiting for some like Daniel to set [their] face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes (Dan. 9:3) some who like Daniel when a very young man purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the kings meat, nor with the wine which he drank? (Dan. 1:8). Or like Daniel toward the close of his life as he was mourning three full weeks, eating no pleasant bread, neither flesh nor wine...neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled? (Dan. 10:3).
To Daniels contemporary Ezekiel the word of the Lord came, saying, I sought for a man among them that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before Me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none (Ezek. 22:30). Who today will pay the price of self-denying intercession despite the misunderstanding and possible ridicule of fellow Christians who are complacently at ease in Zion? Cried Spurgeon: Here is the day for the man where is the man for the day?
