 Bush invited to Muslim-Christian summit

Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade said on Monday he had invited US President George W Bush to a Muslim-Christian summit he suggested at the United Nations in September.

"I invited him," Wade told reporters in French after meeting with Bush at the White House.

"We discussed tensions between Muslims and Christians," said Wade, who bemoaned what he called the "very deep misunderstanding" between adherents to the two religions.

The Senegalese president said at the UN General Assembly in September that he hoped to host the summit in December 2006.

Wade said on Monday that the Vatican and Saudi Crown Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz both backed the idea, and that he had received a supportive letter on the subject from British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
