Happy Thanksgiving!

Since the season is here I thought i would post the first Thanksgiving proclamation. While the proclamation quoted here is the oldest extant thanksgiving proclamation, the thanksgiving being announced was by no means the first thanksgiving.
This proclamamtion was issued on June 20, 1676, by the governing council of Charlestown,Massachusetts

"The Holy God having by a long and continual series of his afflictive dispensations in and by the present war with the heathen natives of this land, written and brought to pass bitter things against his own covenant people in this wilderness, yet so that we evidently discern that in the midst of his judgements he hath remembered mercy, having remembered his footstool in the day of his sore displeasure against us for our sins, with many singular intimations of his fatherly compassion, and regard; reserving many of our towns from desolation threatened, and attempted by the enemy, and giving us especially of late with many of our confederates many signal advantages against them, without such disadvantage to ourselves as formerly we have been sensible of, if it be the Lord's mercy that we are not consumed, It certainly bespeaks our positive thankfulness, when our enemies are in any measure disappointed or destroyed; and fearing the Lord should take notice under so many intimations of his returning mercy, we should be found an Insensible people, as not standing before Him with Thanksgiving, as well as lading him with our complaints in the time of pressing afflictions:

The Council has thought meet to appoint and set apart the 29th day of this instant June, as a day of Solemn Thanksgiving and praise to God for such his goodness and favour, many particulars of which mercy might be instanced, but we doubt not those who are sensible of God's afflictions, have been as diligent to espy him returning to us; and that the Lord may behold us as a people offering praise and thereby glorifying Him; the Council doth commend it to the respective ministers, elders and people of this jurisdiction; solemnly and seriously to keep the same beseeching that being persuaded by the mercies of God we may all, even this whole people offer up our bodies and souls as a living and acceptable service unto God by Jesus Christ."

Just as these people, we have much to be thankful for in the midst of our trials.

I am personally thankful for the ministry of SermonIndex and for all your fellowship in this forum, grace and peace to you all in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Ron

Amen. What a God send this ministry has been. Its like going to Church everyday. its almost a 21st century version of the fellowship of the saints from house to house. We break bread- just not in the literal sense.

Hope you all are well this holiday season!

God Bless,

-Robert

 Re: Giving Thanks

I'm thankful for all of you who make this site rich. We have so much to thank God for. I'm most thankful that he has set his love upon me and in his mercy, he opened my eyes to see the truth. I could have lived the rest of my life in religious deception and never known God, but God showed me mercy. It is amazing! Do you all know the song, Shout To The Lord? It says,

Shout to the Lord, all the earth, let us sing
Power and majesty, praise to the King
Mountains bow down and the seas will roar
At the sound of your name

I sing for joy at the works of your hands
Forever I'll love you, forever I'll stand
Nothing compares to the promise I have in you!

This says it all. Love ya'll. Dian.

 Re:

In Canada we have already had thanksgiving about 1 month ago. You Americans are always behind time.. hee hee. Have a great thanksgiving what a privildge to live in a country where we can worship and thank God openly and have the scriptures of God individually to read and know more about God.

On a funnier note :-P

 Re: Thanksgiving

Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever. 1 Ch 16:34 (does anyone know how many times this verse is repeated in the bible?!)

Sing praise to the Lord, You saints of His, And give thanks at the remembrance of His holy name. Ps. 30:4

Oh, give thanks to the Lord! Call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the peoples! Ps. 105:1

"We give You thanks, O Lord God Almighty, The One who is and who was and who is to come, Because You have taken Your great power and reigned. Rev 11:17
------------------

I am thankful for so many things this year- I couldn't begin to name them all- even for my sufferings- because I know that I will reflect a little more of His image as time goes on.

Have a very happy and blessed Thanksgiving!!!

In His perfect love, Chanin
