After rumour of Quran desecration in US, Muslims damage church in Panjab

MALERKOTLA: Hundreds of Islamic arsonites in Punjab's Malerkotla torched a church. Malerkotla has a sizeable Muslim population. The protest was organised after a rumour spread that some Christians had desecrated the Quran in Michigan, US.

An enraged mob set fire to furniture of the lone church in this predominantly Muslim town, 60 km from Ludhiana, late Sunday night following a rumour about a Quran being desecrated in Michigan, US.

According to information no sooner did the word start doing the rounds about the reported incident in US that a large number of Muslims rushed towards the church located in Loha Bazaar, near Islamia senior secondary school. Before the police could react, they pulled out the furniture and set it on fire.
The irate mob even tried to set a police bike ablaze when the cops tried to chase them away from the spot.

SSP HS Bhullar, while confirming that the trouble was sparked off by a rumour, said that the situation has been brought under control.

As news spread hundreds of Christians gathered near Christian Medical College and Hospital premises in Ludhiana. Eyewitnesses said some of them were brandishing swords while raising slogans. The protesting crowd even burnt some tyres. Police force was rushed to the area to prevent any major flare-up.

Tempers have been frayed every since a controversial US pastor Terry Jones had announced that he would torch copies of Quran on the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

Curfew was imposed in Punjab’s Malerkotla town Monday following communal tension in which the property of a church was set on fire by a mob enraged after rumours that the Quran has been burnt in the US.

GCIC feels bad hearing that Malerkotla have broken their decade long harmony and ended up doing this act which brings shame to the city and its resident. Just wish it stays a lone case and this fire doesn't spread elsewhere.
