Help with internet safety

I have just had internet installed and want to know if there are any free internet filters that members use. If there are none free what are your recommendations to purchase one? For my souls protection and that of other members who may not have availed themselves of this technology any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you have cable installed? If so, you need a firewall. I use zone alarm, they are running a sale on their "ZoneAlarm Extreme Security" for $39.95 yr (reg 79.95). I use that.

I have also used Spysweeper. Now understand, I used to use both because zonealarm only provided the firewall while spysweeper provided the spyware removeal!

Now they both provide extreme security! Both are good. I used to use all kinds of free stuff and now I just pay for good support! It's worth it in the long run to me.

If you do not have the funds right now, zone alarm has a free firewall that is good but if you are going to do any banking, you'll need to upgrade!!

God bless you in your search!!!

 Re:

brother taylors option is good, if you have older children that may browse the wen this filter can do most things, its very good for being free. Also if you use firefox, you can use several addons, like "no script" that stops all images and java scripts etc, so if you visit a page you judge ok , you can click ok for that site alone and it will remember next time you visit, there are also many other "security" plugins to set up pop ups, commercials etc, you can pretty much "design" what you want to see and not, of course this means maybe a few extra clicks on every new site you visit, and it takes about 10 seconds extra, but i think they are very useful tools. And once you clicked for example sermonindex as ok, you will always see it as normal. and any other page also you visit frequently

also id like to add the best spyware/antivirus software availible i would say eset, it is a few dollars more expensive, but its worth it for those willing to pay for software as the free ones do have some downsides you may want to check it out http://www.eset.com/

 Re:

Some great free safety software is, spyware blaster, spybot search and destroy, AVG anti virus, CCleaner, and if you need a firewall zone alarms free versions is great. If you have DSL or Cable and are using a router then most use a hardware firewall that will cover you as well. Just make sure what ever software you use, keep it up to date and run scans. If you are concerned about children safety on the internet many internet providers offer parental controls.
Good luck

 Re:

Are you using a router? If so there is an EXCELLENT free filter/monitor called OpenDNS .

What I suggest is opening an account with opendns, make the password where you know half and another person knows half. Then open your router settings, set opendns as your DNS server (instructions are on the opendns website, and you should find additional help on your router manufacturer's website), and create a password to your router settings so that you know half and the other person knows half. If you need extra help, PM me, I may be able to help.

Of course, if you live with another adult, just set up your computer so that you need someone else to log on, and they need you to log on, etc. before anyone can access the computer. That way some one is always there. Safety in numbers. Oh, and make sure your computer is in open space, like the kitchen or living room.

After reading the guys responses, I went "duh Lisa!" Your request went totally over my head, sorry about that! My response was good if you wanted safety for your computer!

For your soul's sake, here's another option that I've heard other people use: Safe Eyes...

God bless you and yours,

Many thanks to each of you that responded. It looks like I have some research to do now but at least I have a direction. God bless.
