Broken BreadDaily Devotions from the Daily Lightby Evan HopkinsJune 29His commandments are not grievous.--I John 5:3How is it that many think they are? Well, you say, because they have never been "born again." To those who are unrenewed, all God's requirements are irksome. True, but how is it to many that have been converted to God, who have been born of the Spirit, His commandments are, very often, hard and irksome? The answer is to be sought, not in the fact that the new nature alone being needed, but also a right disposition of heart, in addition to the new nature, being essential to all happy and harmonious walking with God alone the line of His will. Here, then, is a useful test in ascertaining our true spiritual condition. How do I regard God's commandments? Do I take comfort of His promises, while at the same time I turn aside from His commandments? To be in a right condition of soul is to be finding as much liberty and encouragement in what God requires of us as in what He bestows on us.
