The first time I came across a discipleship class while visiting another church once, I was greatly offended and grieved in my spirit about it. No doubt, the people putting on the class were probably well intentioned and sincere Christians. And if asked, they would probably admit that discipleship is a life-time commitment, and not just a class one takes. They probably were just looking to give people a bedrock of understanding for their faith. But still, my spirit cringed at the thought. While there is much need these days for more systematic and comprehensive teaching in the church, and learning the ins-and-outs of the faith at its most basic levels, I'm afraid such classes invite a mindset other than what Christ thought of.
