Joy in the midst of Pain and Suffering

Our church movement(NFI) recently featured the topic of suffering in their quarterly magazine, now I don't pretend to be an expert on this subject but isn't it interesting that two apparently contradictory states of emotion/being can exist within a believer thanks to the empowering of the HS?

Your thoughts avid reader?

 Re: Joy in the midst of Pain and Suffering

two apparently contradictory states of emotion/being

When did "pain and suffering" become the contradiction of joy?

First off, joy is not an emotion but it is a state of being. Joy certainly gives place for emotions but it is neither bound by them or to them.

Secondly, if your joy is "apparently contradicted" by pain and suffering then your heart is being influenced by the powers of this worldy system more than the power of Christ's kingdom. That is, a mind set on the flesh which is death, and that is definitely a joy killer because the mind set on the flesh turns away from faith and neither can be obedient to the Spirit of Life.

Matthew 13
20. But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;
21. Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.
22. He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.

To be specific, "offense" is the contradiction of joy while pain and suffering for the Lord's sake is a matter of great joy "for great is your reward in heaven".

Matthew 5
10. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
12. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
