 Re: Catholecism

One thing is look at one of their New American Study Bibles (always under $10 at a resale store or heck go to a library) and just look at the notes....they speak against themselves. In my St. Josephs edition they have the rosary prayer right in 1Corinthians 15!! A mountaintop experience of the ressurection of Christ and the hope it brings us...and the flippin rosary :-?

So maybe do something like that so you can figure out how a Catholic thinks (although I wonder if thoughtful prayer takes place in most of their doctrines).

Also I know we Protestants have websites like this, or websites with free systematic theology lectures...do the Catholic Folk have anything like that? Please let me know

Re: learning about the RC Church

Hi, Alf, it looks like you are launching out into a big project – that is, the study of RC doctrine. Do you have a specific reason for this? Have you come form a catholic background?

By the way, you should have no problem finding information. on the net, but here is where you need a big dose of discernment. There are plenty people who have a hostile spirit and their only aim is to extenuate all the evils in the RC religion.

The RC church is well aware of the criticisms against them, and you should be able to find an RC site which addresses the “misconceptions” protestants have of Catholics, and their refutations. That has in the past helped me understand their manner of dealing with these objections.

May I make another suggestion: Study the similarities between RC practice and protestant practice. The Reformation did not change everything that should have been changed. I suspect that some of our biggest downfalls as protestants are no different than the downfalls of the catholic church. We too have had a terrible problem with works centered living. We too have had a tendency to digress into hierarchies (though less massive) – dependencies on the religious establishment instead of God. We too see abuse of power. We too tend to put our religious practice ahead of Christ himself. Human reliance on religion as a means of absolving guilt seems to be a universal malady – and keeps the whole system going. I suppose you can't blame it all on weakinesses of the Reformation, but on the fallen nature of humans in general.

These days there seems to be a melting down of ideas and beliefs. You may find that the average catholic on the street thinks no differently than the average postmodernists. I say that, because, after all your searching you may discover that some of the errors of the church doctrine don’t affect the average catholic nearly as much as the errors of society.

Having said that, though, I often meet ex-Catholics who carry a strong grudge against the RC church because of past abuse of religious power - spiritual abuse. These “victims” don’t need more fuel for their burning rage, although it is helpful too understand their pain and empathize. As for any of us, they need the power of Christ’s forgiveness so that they can forgive their past and be set free to live victoriously in him.

Diane

 Re:

Diane,

Thank you for the response, it was very informative and holds many views on the RC that i myself believe in.

I just wanted a good author on the church for research purposes mainly due to the fact that i live in a hispanic community that has its tradition deep into Catholicism so i wanted some good points that i may be able to use in conversations.

Alot of the stuff in the internet is very filled with anger and bitterness as mentioned in the other replies to this post. Due to this i wanted a solid man of God that wrote a good book on the subject.

I dont mind popery around Christmas time. Other than that, I dont care for it at all. Tends to smell to strong, and makes my sinuses start getting backed up.

Unfortunately tho, my wife loves popery.

Oooooo, Krispy!
Somewhere around here is a "sense" of humor!
Not a reality of humor, just a mere "sense" of it!
