 Annan denounces anti-Semitism

UN’s Annan denounces anti-Semitism

Says world must not remain silent, stresses that political developments in the Middle East are no excuse for anti-Semitism.

Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom called UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan this evening (Monday, June 21) to thank him for his strong remarks against anti-Semitism at the opening of a UN conference on the issue.
In his address, Annan spoke out against remaining neutral in the face of intolerance, noting that it is difficult to believe that 60 years after the Holocaust anti-Semitism is raising its head again.

“It is clear that we are witnessing an alarming resurgence of this phenomenon in new forms and manifestations,” added Annan, stressing that “this time the world must not, cannot be silent”.
Annan also criticized the UN’s 1975 decision equating Zionism with racism, referring to it as an “unfortunate decision” and noting he is happy it was later rescinded.

Annan also called on the UN’s Human Rights Commission to find more effective ways to combat anti-Semitism, noting that “political issues including those in Israel or elsewhere in the Middle East never justify anti-Semitism.”
A foreign ministry source said that the speech marks a milestone in relations between the UN and the Jewish people, noting that “the remarks made by the UN Secretary-General were sharp and clear”.
