| Sabbath | | Today I stumbled across this forum which has been discussing the issue of the Saturday Sabbath and its relevance or indeed its irrelevance.
It was impossible to go through all of the comments made, so I will attempt make my comments brief.
First of all, I believe that we are all on a journey which requires humility and patience. We must also understand that Bible was not written to support a denomination or a theory or personal issues. It was written to reveal to us the nature and purposes of our heavenly Father. It is a manual on Holy, victorious living (and indeed a manual on how to achieve and sustain this).
In essence the Bible is Jewish from start to finish. Therefore, it is important to begin by looking at the Bible from a Jewish perspective. After all, the words written were given to a Jewish nation (i.e first 5 books of the Bible - "Torah"). The prophecies of the Old Testament were originally to the Jewish people and finally, the New Testament was an account of a Gospel that began with the Jewish people first.
The Sabbath, was given to them with nine other commandments (which I refer to as a summary of the books of Moses] The Sabbath ( as we all agree) existed prior to the formation of the nation of Israel as was the issue of murder, theft etc.
This day (Sabbath) was set apart from creation and at no time did the Bible say that the Sabbath was abolished along withe rest of the Law (correctly translated Torah). If this were the case, why would Jewish Messiah (From the tribe of Judah, which is where we get the term 'Jew') teach from Torah (Matthew 5:21, 27) and then proceed to abolish his own teachings.
Also, if the Torah given to Moses has been abolished, why teach about murder, adultery, love etc
In conclusion. Saturday Sabbath was always a part of the Jewish community (even today). But due to the attempt by Constantine and others to move the Church away from its Hebraic roots we have been left confused over issues that were never confusing to the early Church. Where there was confusion, it usually came out of peoples attempts to interpret what actually needed no interpretation at all.
Please pray about this.

It would be best to add your comments to the current thread, rather than starting a new one. Just press "Reply" at the bottom of one of the posts of the current thread.

Not abolish, fulfill!
That is the wonder and glory of it all, and the reality of the Gospel.
Jesus cried out on the Cross, "IT IS FINISHED!"
We must believe it, and walk in the light of it.
See 2Corinthians 3 and 4 (my emphasis):
3:7 Now if the dispensation of death, carved in letters on stone, came with such splendor that the Israelites could not look at Moses face because of its brightness, fading as this was, 8 will not the dispensation of the Spirit be attended with greater splendor? 9 For if there was splendor in the dispensation of condemnation, the dispensation of righteousness must far exceed it in splendor. 10 Indeed, in this case, what once had splendor has come to have no splendor at all, because of the splendor that surpasses it. 11 For if what faded away came with splendor, what is permanent must have much more splendor. 12 Since we have such a hope, we are very bold, not like Moses, who put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not see the end of the fading splendor. 14 But their minds were hardened; for to this day, when they read the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away. 15 Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their minds; 16 but when a man turns to the Lord the veil is removed. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being changed into his likeness from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
And here's the link with the creation, of which the Sabbath was an ordinance:
4:6 For it is the God who said, Let light shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.
7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. 8 We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10 always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. 11 For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh.
An illustration would be of someone who went to university and got a basic degree in a particular subject.
He then went on to get a PhD (a doctorate) in the same subject.
Would he cling to the fact that he had an ordinary degree, or would he rejoice even more that he now had a PhD?
In applying for a job, would he mention that he had an ordinary degree and fail to say he had a PhD?
The second degree surpassed the first to such an extent that the first wasn't really relevant to him any more.
Does that mean that all he learned while he was getting the first degree was useless? No, of course not. It was a valuable stepping stone to something greater!
Blessings
