He who has begun a good work in us... Spurgeon

Spurgeon, "The Singular Origin of a Christian Man"

He who has begun a good work in us
will perform it unto the day of Christ.

What an amount of patience,
what an amount of power,
what an amount of skill,
what an amount of love,
what an amount of grace,
has God spent upon us hitherto!

Think of the power that has cut lines
of beauty in such steel as we are!

Think of the patience that lent its arm,
and its eye, and its heart, and its infinite
mind, to the carrying on of the supreme
work of producing the image of Christ in
those who were born in sin!

Think of the skill which makes heirs
of God out of heirs of wrath!

See how he has continued to work upon
us, year after year, with final perseverance
of undiminished love!

How much more power will still be needed,
and how much more patience, and how
much more careful wisdom, before we
shall be perfect and complete!

He who has begun a good work in us
will perform it unto the day of Christ.

This is one of the greatest of marvels!

It behooves all of us who know that
God has been at work with us, to adore
him continually for what he has done.

I know you sigh because a part of the
picture still looks rough and incomplete.
Consider that the Artist has not ended
his labor upon that portion of us!

Sanctification in its practical issues is not
yet ended. But do not sigh so much over the
incomplete part as to fail in rejoicing over
that which is accomplished.

Rejoice that a hand has been laid upon the
canvas which is matchless even in its outlines,
and foundation colors; a hand, moreover, which
was never yet known to throw away a canvas
upon which it had once commenced a masterpiece!

Re: He who has begun a good work in us... Spurgeon

(Octavius Winslow, "Morning Thoughts")

"If God is for us, who can be against us?"
Romans 8:31.

With such a Father, such a Friend, and such a
Comforter, who can wage a successful hostility
against the children of God?

God Himself cannot be against us, even when the
clouds of His providence appear the most lowering,
and His strokes are felt to be the most severe.
"Though He slays me, yet will I trust in Him."

The law cannot be against us; for the Law-fulfiller has,
by His obedience, magnified and made it honorable.

Divine justice cannot be against us; for Jesus has,
in our stead, met its demands, and His resurrection
is a full discharge of all its claims.

Nor sin,
nor Satan,
nor the ungodly,
nor suffering,
nor death,
can be really or successfully against us, since . . .
the condemnation of sin is removed,
and Satan is vanquished,
and the ungodly are restrained,
and suffering works for good,
and the sting of death is taken away.

"If God is for us, who can be against us?"

With such a Being on our side, whom shall we fear?

Has He ever been a wilderness to you, a land of
darkness? Has He, in any instance, been unkind,
unfriendly, unfaithful? Never!

All His love,
all His grace,
all His perfections,
all His heaven of glory is for you!

Trembling Christian! God is on your side!

"If God is for us, who can be against us?"

 Re:

"What then are we to say about these things??"
If God is for us, who is against us??"

He was "for us" before the worlds were made;
He was "for us" else He would not have given
His well-beloved Son; He was "for us" when we
were ruined by the fall--He loved us notwith-
standing all!! He was "for us" when we were
rebels against Him, He was "for us" or He would
not have brought us humbly to seek His face.
He has been "for us" in many struggles, many
dangers, through trials and temptations sore,
He is "for us!"
He is "for us" with all the infinity of His
very being, with all the omnipotence of His
divine love; with all the infallibility of
His perfect wisdom. He is eternally and
immutably, "for us!!"
