Serious Thoughts For Ministers of the Gospel

Serious Thoughts For Ministers of the Gospel by Andrew Bonar

*The grand scope of the christian ministry is to bring men home to Christ.

*I see that spirituality of mind is the main qualification for the work of the ministry.

*Your work is to save souls.

*Wherever you are, remember you are a minister.

*The readiest way of finding access to a man’s heart is to go into his house.

*In preaching study not to draw applauses, but groans from the hearers.

*A minister who is “a man pleaser” is a soul destroyer.

*Let every minister, while he is preaching, remember that God makes one of his hearers.

*Let Jesus Christ be all in all; Study Christ, preach Christ, live Christ.

*Preach no sermon without lifting up your heart to God both before and after its delivery, that it may be blessed to the people.

*One soul converted to God is better than thousands merely moralized, and still sleeping in their sins.

*Melancthon says of Luther, “I have often found him in tears praying for the church.”

*Frequently visit your Sunday Schools, if it is only to walk through them.

*Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers. Acts 20:28

We need more preachers that would weep for souls.

Thank you Tears_of_joy for all those sentences.

A letter from Andrew Bonar to his brother Horatius,
Dated April 30th, 1846

“…our hearers float down the stream to the lake of fire, and we sit on the banks writing sermons and speaking words, instead of really rushing to their rescue, declaring the whole mind of God opened out at Calvary. O brother, let us go [out] under the Holy Spirit’s teaching anew–to be taught the Word–and how to preach the contents of the Word, not our thoughts upon it. One spark of lightning is worth a thousand of tame candle-flames, so, one sentence given us by the Holy Ghost is worth volumes of any other.”
