| Meditations on Psalm 119 by Isaac Watts | |
The Blessedness of Saints, and Misery of Sinners
Blest are the undefiled in heart, Whose ways are right and clean; Who never from thy law depart, But fly from every sin.
Blest are the men that keep thy word, And practise thy commands; With their whole heart they seek the Lord, And serve thee with their hands.
Great is their peace who love thy law; How firm their souls abide! Nor can a bold temptation draw Their steady feet aside.
Then shall my heart have inward joy, And keep my face from shame, When all thy statutes I obey, And honor all thy name.
But haughty sinners God will hate, The proud shall die accursed; The sons of falsehood and deceit Are trodden to the dust.
Vile as the dross the wicked are; And those that leave thy ways Shall see salvation from afar, But never taste thy grace. _________________ Paul Frederick West

Secret Devotion and Spiritual-Mindedness
To thee, before the dawning light My gracious God, I pray; I meditate thy name by night, And keep thy law by day.
My spirit faints to see thy grace, Thy promise bears me up; And while salvation long delays, Thy word supports my hope.
Seven times a day I lift my hands, And pay my thanks to thee; Thy righteous providence demands Repeated praise from me.
When midnight darkness veils the skies, I call thy works to mind; My thoughts in warm devotion rise, And sweet acceptance find. _________________ Paul Frederick West

Professions of Sincerity, Repentance, and Obedience
Thou art my portion, O my God; Soon as I know thy way, My heart makes haste t' obey thy word, And suffers no delay.
I choose the path of heav'nly truth, And glory in my choice; Not all the riches of the earth Could make me so rejoice. The testimonies of thy grace I set before my eyes; Thence I derive my daily strength, And there my comfort lies.
If once I wander from thy path, I think upon my ways, Then turn my feet to thy commands, And trust thy pard'ning grace. Now I am thine, for ever thine, O save thy servant, Lord; Thou art my shield, my hiding-place; My hope is in thy word.
Thou hast inclined this heart of mine Thy statutes to fulfil; And thus, till mortal life shall end, Would I perform thy will.

How True.

| Re: | | These little gems are all based upon Psalm 119. They are so very clean and pure. I do thank God for the old ways of purity and holiness. Reading Watts is like taking cool drinks of water from a mountain spring.

Instruction from Scripture
How shall the young secure their hearts, And guard their lives from sin? Thy word the choicest rules imparts To keep the conscience clean.
When once it enters to the mind, It spreads such light abroad, The meanest souls instruction find, And raise their thoughts to God.
'Tis like the sun, a heav'nly light, That guides us all the day; And through the dangers of the night, A lamp to lead our way.
The men that keep thy law with care, And meditate thy word, Grow wiser than their teachers are, And better know the Lord.
Thy precepts make me truly wise: I hate the sinner's road; I hate my own vain thoughts that rise, But love thy law, my God.
The starry heavens thy rule obey, The earth maintains her place; And these thy servants night and day Thy skill and power express.
But still thy law and gospel, Lord, Have lessons more divine; Not earth stands firmer than thy word, Nor stars so nobly shine.
Thy word is everlasting truth, How pure is every page! That holy book shall guide our youth, And well support our age. _________________ Paul Frederick West

Delight in Scripture; or, The Word of God Dwelling in Us
O how I love thy holy law! 'Tis daily my delight; And thence my meditations draw Divine advice by night.
My waking eyes prevent the day To meditate thy word; My soul with longing melts away To hear thy gospel, Lord.
How doth thy word my heart engage! How well employ my tongue! And in my tiresome pilgrimage, Yields me a heav'nly song.
Am I a stranger or at home, 'Tis my perpetual feast; Not honey dropping from the comb So much allures the taste.
No treasures so enrich the mind; Nor shall thy word be sold For loads of silver well refined, Nor heaps of choicest gold.
When nature sinks, and spirits droop, Thy promises of grace Are pillars to support my hope, And there I write thy praise. _________________ Paul Frederick West
