 Historical proof for Jesus

Is there any contemporary proof for jesus's miracles outside the Gospels? Please do not mention josephus. I was wondering why there isn't more written about Jesus if he really walked the earth and did miracles. Don't mention tacitus, he only mentions jesus in reference to christians. Do not mention Pliny he does the same thing. Or that samaritan dude that no one knows anything about. I am looking for contemporary literature. Please help.

 Re:

Well, I'm no scholar or historian, but from what I have heard from actual scholars and historians (both secular and Christian!), few deny that Jesus Christ walked the earth. Many secular scholars do not deny that Christ performed miracles, and I have heard / know of a few secular guys who don't even deny that Jesus appeared to his disciples after his supposed resurection. But they do try and rationalise these incidences by claiming Jesus had a twin/stunt double, and other ludicrous ideas like that!

For me personally, it's actually easier to believe that Jesus Christ was the perfect, crucified and resurected Son of God, than it is to believe that He was a lunatic and madman with a lookalike friend who got crucified for Him.

Hope this helps,
Rich

 Re:

I can't imagine why too many ancient historians would have wanted to preserve evidence of his miracles. TO do so would be validating a Radical whose doctrines opposed worship of the gods and leaders of their countries. In fact, I expect it was potentially life threatening to even suggest in some of these countries that Christ was legitimately divine.

Then there is the whole issue of Satan's war on faith. God has promised to preserve His word, but not necessarily the words of others concerning Christ.

I believe there is also a lack of ancient source material regarding most of the old testament mircales, too. But the power of the Spirit in them still moves!

 Re: Historical proof for Jesus

Based on standards for ancient literature there are "plenty" of secular literature supporting the exsistence and life of Christ.
Of all things one of the most reliable sources is the secular Jewish Talmud. Since the references to Christ are unfriendly the sources are considered the more reliable.
In the Babylonian Talmud we read "It has been taught: On the eve of passover they hanged Yeshu.'
In a later Talmudic passage it asserts "Yeshu had five deciples-Mattai, Nakkai, Netzer Buni, and Todah." While "Mattai" may be a reference to Matthew, no is sure that the other names can be identifed with any of the other disciples named in the Gospel account. At any rate, on thing is sure: this text makes it clear that the Jewish tradition accepts the fact that the rabbi Jesus did have followers.
There is more info here but I don't have time to type it all.
I don't know how in depth your study is but more info can be found online. I love this kind of stuff as a hobby.
I would be glad to send you more info if you PM me.
Only the most liberal scholars deny Christ ever lived.

In Him,
geddingsm

 Re:

Geddingsm is wise in looking at the Talmud. Great resource.

Why do you say "Please do not mention josephus." Josephus was a Jewish historian. Do you think historians are non-crediable?

Some Christian's that I know are far superor on this topic than myself, are listed below.

Check through Lee Strobel's videos, free streaming, on this subject.

http://www.leestrobel.com/Christ.htm

Here is a free online seminary course on Apologetics. (This will go over other verifiable evidences for the Truth in God, Creation, Bible, and the resurrected Jesus)

http://www.biblicaltraining.org/class.php?class=TH201

If you want some audio, Dr.Phil Fernades is a great teacher (my opinion), he is a very rare breed, he gives many sources in his teachings, unlike many other apologetic people I've heard.

(These are the names of the audio, in ORDER as seen on the website below, with the number of teachings) Check out his series on:
'historical apologetics: 1-28'
'Intro to Apologetics 1-12'
'Bibical Reliablity: 1-2'
'Did Jesus really rise?: 1-2'
'Historical evidence for Christ: 1-2'
'Intro to Apologetics: 1-2'
'Refuting the Jesus Seminar: 1-2'
'Jesus of History: 1-2'
'Resurrection of Jesus: 1-2'
'The Historical Jesus in a Postmodern Age'

So far, this is all I know. Great people that teach it. I'm trying to learn these things myself, but learn from the best.

I heard that the yeshu cannot be confirmed that they are even talking about our jesus since many were named yeshu at the time.

I was just saying that to see if there were more references to Jesus life. I don't have anything wrong with Josephus. I just don't see why there wouldn't be more writing of his miracles of his life outside the four gospels consideing the things that he did.
I will listen to that teacher and see if there is anything i am looking for. Thanks
