Re: what is a virtuous man or women?

Charlene,

In response to your question, my first thought went to Proverbs 31 in the OT. There it describes the virtuous woman. Then in the NT my mind went to 1 Corinthians 13 which would apply to both genders. The love chapter would detail the motivations of a life lived or how love is manifested in your interactions with people. The Proverbs one would detail some of the practical aspects of life as a woman in how she relates to her family, etc.

These are my thoughts. What are yours?

They are genunie- having a charcter of sincerlty and being honest peron.
One who genune love others.
they are free from hpocristy
Being sincere-prue and true in heart and action
They give there whole heart, they are heart felt
They have a earnest devtion, with afeeling inward, but they express it outward
They have good judgementThey they know from what is good and wrong.

 Re:

I realize that most of us will have an appreciation for the importance of seeing virtue first as a reverence for God...still it is worth clearly stating at the onset of this discussion.

Quote:
It means Morally excellent

We may remember that Benjamin Franklin famously (and publicly) set out to achieve moral perfection in his own character. When someone pointed out to him that humility was not on his impressive list of self-prescribed virtues, he resolved to ammend his list, and his behavior, by "imitating Jesus and Plato."

Precisely how one can simply decide to practice humility without actually possessing humility was never answered by America's enlightened first statemen.

The point here is that claiming moral excellence outside of Christ is hardly virtuous in God's eyes, since such ambition is rooted in the rankest self-righteousness man is capable of. In victorian and modern times, we have seen how Christian humanists have fossilized their once spirit-filled churches simply by striving to have good virtuous character while having ...no fear of God before their eyes." Romans 3:18.

So, for us, Godly virtue is not something born from a motivation to have morally perfect character but born of a holy love to be pleasing and reverent to God.

"Let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God." 2 Corinthians 7:1 :-)

Blessings!

MC
