 French Presidential Electioneering

I caught a clip on BBC Radio 4 this evening (here) that there is to be a change of programme at 8pmBST (7pmGMT) from the written schedule.

The broadcast now is to be about the imminent first round elections for the new French President.

What caught my ear, is that depending which of the twelve candidates get through to the next round, eventually to win, the implications are not just for France (who with Germany have a huge say in everything which happens to and within the European Union), but to the whole of Europe.

There are now twenty-five countries in the European Union, so you might want to get in at the grass roots of this expose, especially if you have the emotional stamina for this kind of thing.

There are believed to be three main candidates with a chance. One is extreme right. Another is middle. The third is the only woman running. If she won, she would be the first female President France has ever had.

The particular issue exercising all these candidates, is the 'gentle' economic decline which has occurred under the current President.

To listen now, scroll down the linked page to French Election Special.
