| Brennan Manning? | | I have been recommended a book by Brennan Manning called 'Abba's child'. Has anyone read it? Does anyone know much about him?
I saw something on the internet about him being a wolf in sheeps clothing and that he is still a Catholic- does anyone know? Thanks _________________ George Platt

He is a advocate of a "ragamuffin" gospel which is easy on sin and the sinner. He is nothing near to apostolic belief. A easy persual of the new testament in context will prove his gospel presentation wrong. The big emphasis he will give in some of his books is that Jesus was a friend of sinners and "hung" around them alot. There are so many good "old" books to read I am not sure why anyone is reading these new fluffly theology books that have no substance. _________________ SI Moderator - Greg Gordon

I agree with you man...books are so influential and if you walk into any Christian Bookstore today, you will find mostly self-help stuff. How to cope..how to improve your people skills...how to build a bigger church, etc.
Can you recomend some old fashion books that God would approve of?

This is the stack of books I have been referencing to and reading this week.
Here are some more good books:

| Re: | | The Christian In Complete Armour - William Gurnall I reccomend the three part version, but either is wonderful! Today's Gospel - Walter Chantry Life Of God In The Soul Of Man - Henry Scougal Anything by A.W. Tozer Anything by Thomas Watson Most of these books can be found used for fairly cheap. | Re: Brennan Manning? | | Before we write Brennan Manning off completely. I recommend you read his book "The Signature of Jesus." which deals with the crucified life. I found it very deep and challenging in many ways. He gives a chapter to his view of where the church is at and it truly has no "fluff" in it. He holds nothing back in his analysis and is very accurate about many areas the church needs to address. Let me know what you think.

| Re: Brennan Manning? | | Nice to see at least one positive comment....
A word to you gentleman in our faith. Brennan Manning doesn't claim to be spouting canon scripture, he is merely talking to the lot of people (like me) who don't feel like they have it all together. Brennan is not light on sin, as a previous person mentioned. However, he does present the gospel to the sinner that grace and forgiveness is merely a decision away and how powerful the love of God is! I was ministered to by the Ragamuffin Gospel in more ways than you can imagine.
As far as you asking people what book is appropriate and "what God would approve of," I challenge you to think about what you are asking. You are literally asking what book God would stamp "OK" for your spiritual growth. Are you serious?
God doesnt care what we read, man. He just wants us to come to him. Period. Im sure he would prefer if we read and meditate on his word above all things.
I agree that most stuff in bookstores now is fluff. Im a huge Tozer fan. And I highly recommend his "The Pursuit of God." Also I dont agree with everything by him, but Bonhoeffers stuff is good too. Thats the thing, your not gonna agree with everything, man. Manning you might think is crap, but a lot of people have actually grown closer to Jesus because he has reminded them they are loved. And a lot of church culture overlooks that. And remember, the way our world has become, a lot of fatherless kids out there are gonna need reminded they have a father that loves them. This is becoming a more relevant message as the days and years progress.
I encourage you to research stuff before just asking one persons stamp of approval on a book. Manning was pulled from a lifestyle of alcoholism, and sure, probably is Catholic in a lot of ways, but I encourage you to take what he can teach. A broken down priest who is married and is a recovering alcoholic can teach me a lot about Grace I would think, dont you? Id go to him before most evangelical "better than you" types. Maybe the answer lies in identifying with the broken and poor. Just my two cents. No insult intended. I just do not appreciate when we dismiss someone like him before giving him a chance. |
