 Greiving the HS

In the Bible, doesn't it say somewhere that the unforgivable sin is greiving the Holy Spirit? What does it mean?

 Re:

Matthew 12:31Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

Mark 3:29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation.

Luke 12:10 And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.

Blasphemy of the Holy Ghost, or attributing a work that only Christ can do to Satan is the unforgivable sin, not grieving Him.

Thanks for the correction.

'...or attributing a work that only Christ can do to Satan is the unforgivable sin, not grieving Him.'

Forgive my ignorance, but I still don't really understand what it means.

 Re:

A quick look in the dictionary gives the following meanining to the word grieve: cause grief or great distress, suffer grief.

To grieve the Holy Spirit means to cause God sorrow.

Does God grieve, or is He sorrowful, when we sin?

Sin is such a grief to God, that He sent His Son to die for such sins.

God's Holy Spirit within us, is repusled when we sin, also known as grief.

Ephesians 4v30: And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by who you were sealed for the day of redemption.

Hope this helps.

God bless.

 Re: Grieve not

Hi Richard,

Eph 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

This may be old hat to you, but context of course and those words that bridge things; "Therefore", "For" and in this case "And".

A very helpful practice when you find yourself somewhere in the middle of, make that anywhere almost in scripture is to go backwards until you find the begining and forward until you find the apparent end of what is being stated.

What made the writer summuraise all that came before it, what were the things mentioned that caused this statement? Note how it continues with "Let ..."

Of course not! How many times does God work in our lives, and because it is painful to us, we assume that it is of the devil; but later we realize that it is God’s refining fire? Or how often does Satan do something that it so pleasing to us, and so god-like that we are sure it is of God? Are these faulty assumptions unforgivable?? If they were none of us would be heaven bound!

It does seem strange, does it not, that God is not more specific. The verse seems like a sign on a path in the forest: “Danger: one plant here is deadly”. And you are left to guess which plant is deadly.

But God is not that cruel. He bends over backwards to give us the instructions and guidance we need. After all he is not willing that any should perish.

I have come to believe that the reason we do not understand this unforgivable sin is because of our narrow view of sin. We scramble around looking for a particular “act’ to avoid at all cost. After all we view sin as specific acts. We also tend to have a distorted view of the role of the Spirit in the lives of mankind.

Let me ask: Why do people go to hell? What is their real crime?

The book of Hebrews gives helpful insight. It recalls the history of Israel and their failure to enter God’s rest (eternal life). Why not read through the book and then share your observation. What was the reason they did failed to gain eternal life? What was their ultimate unforgivable sin – the sin that lead to the damnation of their souls?
How did that sin relate to the workings of the Spirit in their lives?

"How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?" Heb. 10:29

How does one insult the Spirit of grace?
