How Shall Young Men Secure Their Hearts?

Saints, I pray these words mean as much to you as they do to me. The only thing I love more than reading about the Word of God, is reading the Word of God Itself! Oh, thank you Lord God for your Word, your Living Word which imparts light unto the soul of man! I am disovering more and more that the pure Word of God is the only enduring refuge I have in this word; my wife will pass on, my children will pass on, my pastor will pass on; I cannot trust my feelings, and my knowledge of the Forever Blest is less than a grain of sand upon the shoreline of eternity - even angels cannot be wholly trusted. I have nothing at all but the promises of the written Word of God. My God! Firebrand this golden Word upon the inner recesses of my deceitful heart; and let me meditate upon your deep glory the rest of my days unto Spirit-empowered holiness!

"How shall the young secure their hearts
And guard their lives from sin?
Thy Word the choicest rules imparts
To keep the conscience clean.

When once it enters to the mind,
It spreads such light abroad,
The meanest souls instruction find,
And raise their thoughts to God.

’Tis, like the sun, a heav’nly light
That guides us all the day,
And through the dangers of the night
A lamp to lead our way.

The men that keep Thy law with care,
And meditate Thy Word,
Grow wiser than their teachers are,
And better know the Lord.

Thy precepts make me truly wise:
I hate the sinner’s road;
I hate my own vain thoughts that rise,
But love Thy law, my God.

The starry heav’ns Thy rule obey,
The earth maintains her place;
And these Thy servants, night and day,
Thy skill and power express.

But still Thy law and Gospel, Lord,
Have lessons more divine;
Not earth stands firmer than Thy Word,
Nor stars so nobly shine.

Thy Word is everlasting truth;
How pure is every page!
That holy Book shall guide our youth
And well support our age."

- Isaac Watts (1674-1748)

How shall the young secure their hearts
And guard their lives from sin?
Thy Word the choicest rules imparts
To keep the conscience clean.

Psalms 119:11
11Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee

When once it enters to the mind,
It spreads such light abroad,
The meanest souls instruction find,
And raise their thoughts to God.

Proverbs 4:23
Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

’Tis, like the sun, a heav’nly light
That guides us all the day,
And through the dangers of the night
A lamp to lead our way.

Proverbs 6:23
For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

The men that keep Thy law with care,
And meditate Thy Word,
Grow wiser than their teachers are,
And better know the Lord.

Psalm 119:99
I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.

Thy precepts make me truly wise:
I hate the sinner’s road;
I hate my own vain thoughts that rise,
But love Thy law, my God.

Proverbs 30:8
Remove far from me vanity and lies

The starry heav’ns Thy rule obey,
The earth maintains her place;
And these Thy servants, night and day,
Thy skill and power express.

Job 38:33
Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?

But still Thy law and Gospel, Lord,
Have lessons more divine;
Not earth stands firmer than Thy Word,
Nor stars so nobly shine.

Matthew 24:35
Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away

Thy Word is everlasting truth;
How pure is every page!
That holy Book shall guide our youth
And well support our age."

Proverbs
Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.
For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law
My son, keep thy father's commandment.....

Isaac Watts knew His Word ! Praise God !
May God help us to be parents of the like kind!

 Re:

Sister, you posted a great reply! How blest I was in reading it. Dr. Watts truly knew the Word, and you have so graciously provided the beautiful proof. Thank you, dear sister.

Our Lord's innumerable blessings be upon you.
