Living when sin abounds - Maurice Roberts

Living when sin abounds
by Maurice Roberts

But if you pass over the years and come to the period immediately after - at and after the Second World War - then you see something else just as sinister: You see an attack being made upon Christian laws and the standards of morality which had been accepted by the country before. So,
at the beginning of this century you could say Christian doctrine came under attack, but by the 1960’s it was the morality and the laws and the practices and the outworkings of Christianity that were being overturned.

We are suffering today from the aftermath of that tremendous assault upon the gospel. I would like to use an illustration to make this matter still clearer. You can imagine a river which in the summer time is a mere trickle -just a tiny stream of water, not dangerous in any way-not threatening,
just a little trickle of water in the river bed. Nobody is afraid of that. There is no need for flood warnings issued by the government authorities. But you come back in the autumn, let us say, or the winter or the spring when the snow is melting, and that trickle becomes a great flood and carries
all before it. It breaks down the trees and the bridges and the fences.

Now, that is what our Lord is talking about. There are some periods in history, He says, when iniquity will abound and overflow. Sin will have a tremendous influence upon society. It will not always be the case. Sometimes sin will flow like a little rivulet or a little trickle. It will not be threatening; but in other generations sin will be a mighty force and will threaten to carry everything before it.

Confusion is widespread in society. People do not know where they are, they do not know what to believe, they do not know what is right or what is wrong, they do not know what to understand concerning God.

Many professing Christians are all mixed up and confused. Churches are all mixed up and confused. People lose their bearings and they lose their moorings. Now, that, says our Lord, is a period when sin abounds. And, I do not hesitate to say, that today you and I are living in just such a time. We are living in a time when sin is no longer a rivulet without a menace and without a threat. We are living in a day when sin and unbelief are threatening to carry everything that you and I love before them, to sweep away everything precious, to sweep away all that we believe in and all the laws and practices that God has taught us in His Word.

"This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God."
-2 Timothy 3:1-4

"How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. There be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit."
-Jude 18-19

Quote:
Confusion is widespread in society.

"And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?"
-Jonah 4:11

Quote:
Many professing Christians are all mixed up and confused.

"Ye have wearied the LORD with your words. Yet ye say, Wherein have we wearied him? When ye say, Every one that doeth evil is good in the sight of the LORD, and he delighteth in them; or, Where is the God of judgment?"
-Malachi 2:17
