 Re:

"according to Scripture, how did God work in Abram's life so that Abram knew "what to believe?""

Again, "what to believe" is the point that is essential to our relationship in Christ. Listen to the "what" in Paul's prayer for the believer...

Col 1:9 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

Col 1:10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing [Him], being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;

Col 1:11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy;

Col 1:12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.

This pray of Paul's, the substance of "what" he prays for is introduced to us in the testimony we have of Abram's life.

Act 7:3 "and said to him, 'Get out of your country and from your relatives, and come to a land that I will show you.' [fn]

"I will show you." This is the "what."

 Re:

Again...

"according to Scripture, how did God work in Abram's life so that Abram knew "what to believe?""

Act 7:3 "and said to him, 'Get out of your country and from your relatives, and come to a land that I will show you.' [fn]

and...

Col 1:12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.

Paul is grateful "to the Father who has qualified us" speaks to the work of God. And we know that the purpose for which the Father works is that "we believe in Him whom He sent." And this "qualification" enables us, "to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light."

Paul has used Abram's testimony in Romans and Galatians to teach us something about the "what" or the "work of God" that qualifies us to be partakers of the inheritance.

Act 7:3 "and said to him, 'Get out of your country and from your relatives, and come to a land that I will show you.' [fn]

"...that I will show you."

 Re:

Paul prays for the Ephesians...

Eph 1:15 Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints,

Eph 1:16 do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers:

Eph 1:17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him,

Eph 1:18 the eyes of your understanding [fn] being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,

Eph 1:19 and what [is] the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power

Like the prayer for the Colossians, Paul wants the Ephesians
to experience "what" "are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints," This inheritance comes to us by His power in this way...

Eph 1:17...may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him,

Eph 1:18 the eyes of your understanding [fn] being enlightened;

And why is this "wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him" given?

"that you may know "what" is the hope of His calling,"

Faith is the substance of what is hoped for....

 Re:

Continuing with Paul's prayer in Ephesians 1:15-19...

There are a total of three "whats"

1. "that you may know "what" is the hope of His calling,"

2. " what" are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,"

3. "and "what" [is] the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe"

Faith is the substance of "what" is hoped for...

Paul prays for the believer "that you may know" what?

1. "what" is the hope of His calling,"

2. " what" are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,"

3. "and "what" [is] the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe"

These "whats" or things are expressed in Colossians...

Col 1:9 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

Col 1:10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing [Him], being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;

Col 1:11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy;

1. "to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will"

2. "that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing [Him], being fruitful in every good work"

3. "strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power," for all patience and longsuffering with joy;

The "whats" bring about the fruit of "patience and longsuffering with joy;" in those who come to know...

What is another name for this kind of "fruit"?

The purpose of Paul's prayer for the believer is that they may by the grace of God, experience the fruit of "patience and longsuffering with joy."

Paul declares this in Romans 8...

Rom 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? [Shall] tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

Rom 8:36 As it is written: "For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter." [fn]

Rom 8:37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.

Rom 8:38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come,

Rom 8:39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The above Scripture is highlighting the fruit of "patience and longsuffering with joy."

Why does Paul use Psalm 44 to highlight this precept?

 Re:

"Why does Paul use Psalm 44 to highlight this precept?"

Psa 44:22 Yet for Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

Psa 44:23 Awake! Why do You sleep, O Lord? Arise! Do not cast [us] off forever.

Psa 44:24 Why do You hide Your face, [And] forget our affliction and our oppression?

Psa 44:25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust; Our body clings to the ground.

Psa 44:26 Arise for our help, And redeem us for Your mercies' sake.

The above Scripture is highlighting the fruit of "patience and longsuffering with joy." Read through Psalm 44 and find why these people are used by Paul as our example...

 Re:

Psa 44:9 But You have cast [us] off and put us to shame, And You do not go out with our armies.

Psa 44:10 You make us turn back from the enemy, And those who hate us have taken spoil for themselves.

Psa 44:11 You have given us up like sheep [intended] for food, And have scattered us among the nations.

Psa 44:12 You sell Your people for [next to] nothing, And are not enriched by selling them.

Psa 44:13 You make us a reproach to our neighbors, A scorn and a derision to those all around us.

Psa 44:14 You make us a byword among the nations, A shaking of the head among the peoples.

Psa 44:15 My dishonor [is] continually before me, And the shame of my face has covered me,

Psa 44:16 Because of the voice of him who reproaches and reviles, Because of the enemy and the avenger.

Psa 44:19 But You have severely broken us in the place of jackals, And covered us with the shadow of death.

Psa 44:20 If we had forgotten the name of our God, Or stretched out our hands to a foreign god,

Psa 44:21 Would not God search this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart.

Psa 44:22 Yet for Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

Paul uses this example to illustrate to those he is encouraging that others have gone before them. Even with all that the sons of Korah experienced, they did not fall away because:

Psa 44:17 All this has come upon us; But we have not forgotten You, Nor have we dealt falsely with Your covenant.

Psa 44:18 Our heart has not turned back, Nor have our steps departed from Your way;

This is an example of how the "whats" promoted the fruit of patience and longsuffering.

The fruit of the Spirit has enabled men to love God in good times and bad....

Paul has pointed to Psalm 44 as a benchmark of what can be expected in this life. We might often lose sight of why Paul wrote Romans chapter 8. Paul writes this:

Rom 8:18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy [to be compared] with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

Rom 8:19 For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God.

Rom 8:20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected [it] in hope;

Rom 8:21 because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

Rom 8:22 For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now.

Rom 8:23 Not only [that], but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body.

The "bondage of corruption" is broken by the "whats". The Holy Spirit, who is our counselor, works in us to teach us to love God with our whole heart, mind, and body. It is this love of God that overcomes the corruption that is in this world. However, the believe will still be affected by this corruption which comes from the nonbelievers.

So then this is our hope, as we grow according to the grace of God. We are "eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body."(Romans 8:23)

This is where faith will lead us.
