| Re: rock and roll music | | Ecc 7:5 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.
Psa 14:1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.
So who are fools? They that believe not in God Who is the song of fools? They that believe not in God and make music.
Is this wrong?
Rom 14:23 (second half of the verse) for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
Please note, according to my knowledge I'm not a teacher so trust in the scriptures :) _________________ esvl

| Re: | | It will become a big problem if you categorize up things. Rock is a sin? Then comes the next problem where do we draw the line for rock music? And people would debate that all over. I dont belive rock is a sin. I belive a wrong heart is sin. Sinfull wicked hearts can be found in all kinds of music. Rock, Rap, "worship", Blues, jazz
In the old covernant God got sick and tired of his people in Israel he said in some of the prophets away with your music I dont want it I want a right heart. The thing was not the music it self. David played music. The thing was they sang songs to God but their heart where far from him.
So if someone has a heart close to God but stil plays rock music its totally ok for me.

| Re: rock and roll music | | Thought I'd put this in the correct post. My apologies if you've read this already.
I've thought a lot about this lately. The conclusion I came to is that it depends on from where the inspiration comes. One can sing about all things holy and yet live a life apposed to holiness. Another can sing about about everyday life, never mentioning the things of God pointedly, and yet live a life that is set apart to God.
The conclusion I've come to is that to say whether music is evil or Christian requires us to judge an individuals heart. There is fruit that is viewable in some of the more public musicians and this gives us a good indication.
The whole earth is full of the glory of God and yet the earth is not holy. The earth is a creation of our God and yet people will worship that creation. I guess my point is that music is neither evil nor holy. It is a byproduct of someones emotions and thoughts. What we do with this is often up to us. I can listen to "non-Christian" music and think on the beauty of my God. Admittedly, there is some music out there which is of no use for me. Even though it has no words I cannot listen to dance/techno. It leads my mind to places I don't wish it to go.
Someone quoted the "whatsoever things are pure..." verse. I think that's a good verse to use in determining what we listen to. The beauty of classical, while not always expressly "Christian" will lead many to dwell on the beauty of our salvation. For me, listening to deeply emotional music about real life, leads me to dwell on a caring and fiercely devoted Lord.
I think much of the issue is where OUR heart is at. Still, we must be cautious in feeding our minds words and thoughts that are distinctly opposed to our faith. Just as much, we must be cautious in burdening ourselves with a bunch of self-imposed rules that can just as easily take our minds off of our Savior. We can just as easily forsake God in the pursuit of perfection as we can in indulging fleshly appetites. It's all in our motives and focus. _________________ Matt Smith

| Re: | | I Love some of the old rock, and will always listen to it, if your concerned about listening to it, maybe you should not listen to it. "ALWAYS" let God direct your heart, never man. I posted this a few months back, we used to have an old Baptist pastor back in the 50's and early 60's that use to tell us, there is no one on earth that can condemn us and beat us up more than our own fellow Christian brothers and sisters, he would go on to say, you ain't had a whippin until a Christian brother or Sister gets hold of you,boy that statement is bigger today than ever. _________________ Bill

We don't walk by the letter, do we?
Taste not, touch not, (listen to this or that)?
The Holy Spirit within us will either be grieved by what we listen to or not grieved. Either we are led by the Spirit or we are led by rules (which is a religious form of flesh).
One of Satan's strategies is to get us to codify (make up rules using the Bible) the Christian walk. And as long as we don't break our own rules that we gleaned from the Bible, then we rationalize that we are ok. Which is complete deception. That is what the Pharisees did. It is a false security.
Col 2:19 And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.
And you are no longer "holding the Head", looking to Jesus, walking in the Spirit.
You are not subject to the leading of the Holy Spirit but rather subject to your own ordinances that you have created. Col 2:20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,
Our hearts are deceitfully wicked and can justify and rationalize anything. So, it is more than just our motives because we can rationlize our motives as good, too. We can even justify "what is pure and what is lovely".
The Holy Spirit will tell you exactly what is pure and what is lovely.
It's our relationship with the Lord. Devoid of the Spirit, the letter kills.

| Re: | | Yes, the letter of the law kills. But, praise God, walking in Gods Holy Spirit brings freedom! If it honors not our God: it brings thoughts of sin such as drinking alcohol to forget about you, or laying here with Linda on my mind, or how about if it feels so good how can it be wrong. Maybe, I want a pearl necklace or cocaine or Just call me angel of the morning? No, my friend, to live of the world is to be the world. Gods Holy Spirit would have to convict you every time. We just want to listen or watch on radio or television the things we want to watch. So we call it legalism, or the letter of the law or what ever so we can be God over our own life. No, I would have to call such Christians as spirit blind or deceived. |

| Re: | | Wow, Debra. That's pretty bold. I think you assume too much. Not every song on the radio is about cocaine or the other example you used which I don't even feel right repeating. There are plenty of songs and bands that create music about their life experiences. They sing songs about everything that we all go through, heart ache, pain, love, and happiness. I fail to see how I am spirit blind and deceived because I am actually in the world and these things are a part of my existence.
This is the problem when we start talking about this stuff. Most of the time the other side wants to paint a caricature of the other. I'm certainly not going to go run out and spend all day listening to ZZ Top or any of the other songs you mentioned.
I think 1st Corinthians 8 is a great passage to think on. It speaks to both sides of the equation. I feel free to listen to secular music (within reason and will not pour blatantly wicked lyrics into my head) but also understand that I can't try to convince people that they should feel the same freedom I do. If someone can't handle that kind of music then it is my responsibility to respect that. I think the converse is also true.
There are lines not to be crossed on both sides of this argument. One is to feed my mind with thoughts that are opposed to God. The other is to call your fellow brothers and sister is Christ spirit blind and deceived when they have a different conviction than you do. _________________ Matt Smith

| Re: | | Rom 14:19 Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.
1Co 10:23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
The Holy Spirit will confirm to our spirit if something is edifying and the Holy Spirit will also tell us if we are using our liberty as an occasion for the flesh.
If we are not listening, the Lord reserves the right to chasten and correct his "sons".
