| Anyone know of some good sermons on Calvinism versus Arminianism? | | Dear brothers and sisters,
I'm studying the age-old contrast between Calvinism and Arminianism.
I just got through listening to Piper's 9-part series on TULIP and Steve Lawson's TULIP as well. I thought these were excellent, passionate sermons that do a great job on defining and defending Calvinism.
Now I would really like to hear some powerful sermons on Arminianism. It seems that they are much more scarce and that Arminians don't seem to be as motivated to systematically define and defend Arminianism as Calvinists are with Calvinism. . . .
But does anyone know of sermons that do good job with this? I'm looking for AUDIO sermons that I can listen to during the day. However, I would be open to written sermons as well if that is all that's around.
I would also love to hear sermons that systematically compare the two theologies. Again, it would be nice to hear this from an Arminian perspective since I have already listened to a lot of Calvinist preaching.
Thanks so much! _________________ Nathan

| Re: Anyone know of some good sermons on Calvinism versus Arminianism? | | you can find some discussions here on this topic, if you scroll down a bit Collection of threads
I think david servant does a good job at "consider" some of the "critic" the arminians have against the calvinistic doctrines, you can read that here. 5 points of calvinism considered you will have to click "next chapter" at the bottom of the page to read on.
another book that is "refuting" calvinism is Dave hunts "what love is this" you can see a summary in video format
here... , but i would like to add many calvinist are of the opinion brother Hunt is misrepresenting some aspects of calvinism. I think it is fair to say this may be the case often on both sides.
These are "arminians" that try reason why they dont agree with calvinism, if you want a definition on arminianism i think you could find many various definitions, but if you want some "sound" preachers, in my opinion that are arminian, well basically all who are not calvinistic are arminian... according to my dear reformed brethren :)
anyhow, you could read John Wesley, he has a sermon called or book named "free will" , George Withefield wrote a response to this, both worthy of reading.
others worthy of mentioning that you could draw out good things would be Leonard Ravenhill, A.W Tozer, T.A Sparks, Watchman Nee, Denny Kenaston. If you want to read contemporary to Luther and other reformers you may want to read the anabaptists, you could order the book "martyrs mirror" , many of these anabaptist disagreed with the reformers on some things and thought the reformers only went "half-way" of what they should have.
names worthy of investigating would Conrad Grebel, Felix Mantz, Michael Sattler , Balthasar Hubmaier.
I am not saying all these resources are canonised truth, just some reference material for you to read, study and "weigh" against calvinism, and then take all that and compare to the scriptures. Wheter you come out leaning one way or another.
always remember theology can become an idol
and to round off things id like to add a.W Tozers advice... always a good reminder, at least for me.
I was preparing to go to Nyack College. Before I left there was one burning question I had in mind, and I went to Dr. Tozer and said, "Could you give me some advice concerning the problem of Calvinism versus Arminianism?"
And I'll never forget the advice he gave me. At the time I thought it was rather inconclusive and not too helpful. But I listened carefully. He said, "My son, when you get to college you're going to find that all of the boys will be gathered in a room discussing and arguing over Arminianism and Calvinism night after night after night. I'll tell you what to do, Cliff. Go to your room and meet God. At the end of four years you'll be way down the line and they'll still be where they started, because greater minds than yours have wrestled with this problem and have not come up with satisfactory conclusions. Instead, learn to know God."

| Re: Anyone know of some good sermons on Calvinism versus Arminianism? | | Hi Brother
Last year when I was looking into these things I found some arminian/wesleyian mp3 sermons here:
http://www.imarc.cc/audio/audiodex.html There were times when I was looking into these things that I began to feel great despair in not being able to put it all together. At that time I found Psalm 131 which renewed my hope and eased my difficulties.
Psalm 131 My heart is not proud, O Lord my eyes are not haughty, I do not concern myself with matters too great or wonderful for me, But I have stilled and quieted my soul like a weaned child with its mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me. O Isreal, put your hope in the Lord both now and forevermore.
I think this psalm is similar to what Tozer was saying in brother hmmhmm's post. I have also found Tozer's writings on these matters helpful. I hope this helps
In Christ Tom |

It deconstructs both high church Calvinism (beginning at Reg-104) and Methodism Reg-196). _________________ Wayne Kraus
