"If I want to reach high, I need to begin low"

Excerpt from Christian Growth by Gerhard Du Toit (29-33min)

My brothers and my sisters, God needs to come and put a sentence of death upon the self life!

And I wonder if you seat here tonight and if I can ask you this evening, because the reason we've come together this week is not just to be exposed to some of the great wonders of what God in His Word is about, but the reason why we've come together is because we want God to meet with us!

And if you sit hear this friday night as a man, as a husband or as a father, and you've come to be at the leadership this week, and you've not met with God, my brother I want to challenge you tonight, you can't leave this leadership conference without being able to say that God, and His Spirit has met with me in my relationship with God.

You said: "What is that brother Gerhard" - "It is an downward growth"
You see, the way up is the way down!

J.C.Ryle used to say: "If I want to reach high, I need to begin low"

I will be never been able to remember this, because in number of years ago, a friend of mine we had accountability relationship, you say what is accountability relationship, and it's a relationship where we met with one another once a week, and we would spend two or three hours together, and I've put together twenty questions that we would ask one another, and the first one was:
"Where are you in your relationship with God?"

And we would talk about our quiet times, and the things of God has been saying unto us, and then we would ask one another:
"What are the areas in your life that you are struggling with?"
And we would discuss it and we would pray about that.

And I remember at the end of the year, I phoned him one day and I said, You know we had some great times together this year, and I said, The year is coming to the end, can you and I meet one day for a lunch, and we just look back over the year, and we talk about it?
And as we came out in this restaurant we were standing there looking at one another, and he turned to me that day as we were talking and he just challenged me in my own relationship with God.

And as he look at me, he said: "Brother Gerhard, what was the greatest hindrance in your ministry this last year"
And I am so afraid of this word "my ministry" , I don't know if we got a ministry, we have the privilege in being involved in the greatness of the work of God!

And as he asked me that question that day, it was the last time in the end of that year, somehow we took out the sword and it pierce it once more into my heart and as he pierced into my heart, something deep within my soul begin to break!

And I turn to him and begin to weep like child. He turned to me and said: "Brother Gerhard, did I hurt you?"
I said: "Yes, John, you've really hurt me" And he said: "I'm sorry brother Gerhard". I said: "No, you don't understand!"
Oswald Chambers said: "If you are hurt, there is an area in self-life that God wants to do something!"
You know what happened, he looked at me and said:
"I want to look me in the eyes" and I got hardly do that .......

and he put that sword of eternity and he put it afresh eternity into my being!

And as I looked into his eyes and he said: "What was the greatest hindrance in your ministry this last year"
When I got myself together I looked him into his eyes and said: "Brother John, you know what it was?" He said: "What?" I said: "IT WAS ME"
He said: "What do you mean?" I said: "If I could just got more out of the way!"

Dear Brother Kire,

How true this is; "if I could just get more out of the way!"

Over the last 8 or 9 months as I have been recovering from illness I have had much time to contemplate this very thing. The Lord has many ways to show us what He wants us to see and many times it comes from a simple question from a dear brother or sister in the Lord.
John 3:30
He must increase, but I must decrease.

Thank you Brother Kire, this is truly a blessing.

In His Love

Oh,Brother/Sister.

How true that is.That's what we have to pray for brother/sister.Oh, that a move from God would shake our own worlds and make us more like Christ than like our selfs.I can only imagine what God would do through men and women completly emptied of themselfs and Full of Christ.Having no rights, wanting nothing but God's Glory, Demanding nothing from God. People like that have made this World tremble, not because of themselfs, but because they where so full of God and of his presence in their lives that nearly every prayer God had to answer.Just like Elijah in 1 Kings 18:36-39: "At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: "O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. Answer me, O LORD, answer me, so these people will know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again." Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench. When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, "The LORD -he is God! The LORD -he is God!"Wow.That God would raise men and Gomen like that.God is still the same.

Thank you, Tears_of_joy, it was a blessing.

here is something that reminds me of trhis statement

Erlo Stegen and the revival among the Zulus

excerpt from the article:

"""It was Christmas time when the Revival broke out. “In times of Revival, the Word of God comes alive. It smites us and pierces our heart. The Word of God is like a hammer that breaks the rocks into pieces. It now became clear to me that it wasn’t the heathen who were standing in the way of Revival. I could only cry out: ‘Lord, there is only one person who hinders Your work, and that is me! Please forgive me!’”"""

I have been noticing that there seems to be a more of a separation taking place. There are those who are content to just add Christ to their life. And there are those who are not content until Christ is their entire life.

I want to always be in the second group.

Re: "If I want to reach high, I need to begin low"

A.W.Tozer:
There was a day when men sang, “Holy, holy, holy,” and ohh, worshiped the King and they talked objectively about the greatness of God.
Then we backslid into that gutter where we still are, where everything is about ‘I’.
‘I’m so happy’.
‘I’m so blessed’.
‘I’m so nice’.
‘I’m so good’.
‘I’m, I, always I’.
Well, the difference between heaven and hell is the difference between God and ‘I’.
Keep that in mind always.
