| | Gifts of the Holy Spirit - Part 1 by J. Vernon McGee
Topic: Scripture(s): 1 Corinthians 12 | | Description: Regarding the distribution of gifts, McGee says, “This is not a spiritual smorgasbord where you come to the counter and you take what you want.” If this were so, most would take the more exciting gifts such as tongues, while those gifts such as giving or helping would be less popular. A spiritual gift is a supernatural manifestation of the Spirit given to each believer as God chooses -for the sake of unity in the Body.

He ends with reminding us from the book of Job, that God is thinking of the poor “in their affliction” and therefore so must we.

| | Jeremiah The Man of Sorrows by J. Vernon McGee
Topic: Scripture(s): Jeremiah | | Description: McGee makes comparison of Jesus’ ministry coward’s Jerusalem with the tragic calling of Jeremiah. He examines three aspects of the sorrow of Jeremiah. First he looks at the prophet’s “sincerity” as characterized by bitter loneliness and unpopularity. Second there is the “significance” of Jeremiah’s sorrow, namely that God would judge Israel’s sin. Thirdly, McGee looks at the solution to Jeremiah’s sorrow; the promise of the coming “Righteous Branch…the Lord our Righteousness.”

| | Justification By Works by J. Vernon McGee
Topic: Scripture(s): James 2: 24-26 | | Description: A look at Justification by works in the book of James as compared to Paul’s doctrine of “Justification by Faith.” McGee observed that Paul and James were not standing “face to face” contradicting each other, but rather standing “back to back” defending true biblical faith against two different foes. While Paul was affirming the power of real saving faith, James was criticizing the impotency of empty professing faith. The sermon ends with Pauls’ exhortation. “Examine yourselves whether ye be in the faith.” (Interesting side note: McGee claimed as inaccurate the familiar story that Martin Luther called James an “Epistle of straw”.)
