| | Peter's Rebuke of Christ by John Murray
Topic: Sin | | Description: Sin is the contradiction of God; the governing pattern of our thought must be dictated by God's interests rather than by creaturely interests; Peter quickly turns from making a holy confession of Jesus to wickedly rebuking him; Peter inspired first by God and then by the devil; in a believer there are morally contradictory elements; apparently worthy motives cannot justify methods out of conformity with God's revealed will; there is no compromise by Jesus in giving either rebuke or commendation to his people and we must accept both.

| | Prayer to the Triune God by John Murray
Topic: Trinity | | Description: New Testament writers often mention together the three persons of the Godhead; prayer is preeminently but not exclusively to be addressed to the Father; fatherhood in the realm of deity is the pattern for fatherhood in the human realm; the greatest gifts to us from the Father are not things but the gift of His Son and His Spirit; we must honor the Spirit in his role of giving insight into the glory of Christ; the Spirit is already given to God's people as the first installment of the glory which is coming to them; we experience the discrepancy between what we are and the inestimable gift of the Spirit; a great deal of our ineffectiveness and unfaithfulness in the church is because we have not taken hold of this promise of the Spirit's operation.

| | Self-Denial and Discipleship by John Murray
Topic: Self Denial | | Description: The gospel is free but is cheapened when the demands of discipleship are toned down; discipleship to Christ means abstaining from sin but it is a deception from the devil to make abstinence from innocent things a mark of consecration to Christ; self-denial is not only renunciation of sin but also a denial of our own selves; by reason of Adam's fall our own selves are so identified with sin that the first thing we have to be saved from is ourselves; taking up the cross means that we are not his disciples if we so prize our life that we will compromise his truth and glory; we are not his disciples if we do unethical things in order to keep our livelihood; it is better to die than to live at the expense of a guilty conscience.

| | Spiritual Discernment by John Murray
Topic: Discernment | | Description: We need discernment of truth from error, judging all by the standard of Scripture; Paul calls for three exercises of mind: proving all things, holding fast the good, and abstaining from every form of evil; apply touchstone of truth, because some defects and errors are not immediately apparent, good men can be instruments of promoting error, and heresy comes under the guise of truth; Christians not of one mind, because not humbly subjecting themselves to Scripture and illumination of the Spirit; there is danger of changing to conform to what is coming into vogue; abstinence is a negative made necessary because sin must be resisted; Paul does not say we are to abstain from all that appears to be evil; the church has fallen victim to a prohibitionism that condemns what God has created to be received with thanksgiving; rather the text speaks of abstaining from all that has the character of evil; the cost of discipleship is maintaining absolute abstinence even in what is only a small evil.

| | Temptation by John Murray
Topic: Temptation | | Description: The word tempt can mean 1) to prove or try, or 2) to instigate someone to sin (vs. 12 of this text), or 3) to fall into sin (vs. 14); if we do not appreciate fine distinctions we will not appreciate truth: God has foreordained whatever comes to past, and that includes sin, else God would not be God, but he is not in the least responsible for our falling into sin, because we are lured by our own evil desires; as soon as we acquiesce in the tempter's claims, we have gone astray; the essence of piety is to lay all the blame on our own heart's lusts; there is an inevitable law that if we live after the flesh we shall die; if we dilly-dally with temptation it is because we like temptation; the blessed man who endures temptation gives no sympathetic entertainment to sin; Job 23 points up the resistance Job offered to temptation; temptation is powerless as long as we do not give it our consent; young people need the almighty arm of the Redeemer who himself resisted temptation.

| | The Claims of Christ Are Paramount by John Murray
Topic: Christ | | Description: Jesus did not conceal the cost of discipleship; it brings tribulation and reproach rather than worldly prestige; when we allow anything to interfere with our constant obedience to Him we miss our opportunity and blessing; the claims of Christ may never be displaced by any consideration; God never makes it necessary for us to disobey his commandments though we may suffer for obeying them.
